Motorhead was Lemmy Kilmister, it's very hard to argue. Of course, he had too very capable, very awesome musicians along for the ride… most recently, drummer Mikkey Dee, and guitarist Phil Campbell. In case there was any speculation as to the future of the band, after Lemmy passed away yesterday, Mikkey Dee made it clear the party is over.
Speaking to Sweden's Expressen, Dee said:
”Motörhead is over, of course. Lemmy was Motörhead. But the band will live on in the memories of many.We won’t be doing any more tours or anything. And there won’t be any more records. But the brand survives, and Lemmy lives on in the hearts of everyone.”
Dee went on to recollect how Lemmy was not in the best shape the last few months, but still managed to finish their touring commitments:
”He was terribly gaunt, he spent all his energy on stage and afterwards he was very, very tired. It’s incredible that he could even play, that he could finish the Europe tour. It was only 20 days ago. Unbelievable. It feels fantastic that we were able to complete the tour with him. It’s heartening that we didn’t cancel because of Lemmy.I’m incredibly grateful over the years we had, and that we had such a good time together.”
I was very surprised that Lemmy was even on the road this year, when he should've been at home resting. Then, I realized…the stage was Lemmy's home. It was all he knew his entire life and he just couldn't part with it. As I was writing this story, I stumbled upon this gorgeous cover of "Stand by Me" by Lemmy with Dave Lombardo… I had to hold back some tears.
