When it comes to hardcore, everyone has their own opinion. Questions like "What bands are truly, technically hardcore" or "When did hardcore actually begin?" are debated around the world, as that's how global this little thing that was created out of frustration in everything from suburban basements to NYC flop houses has grown. Which is the perfect lead in for what Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage told fans in a Q&A with Metal Hammer was his favorite hardcore song of all time. Not surprisingly, he picked a tune from one of the genre legends, Sick of it All, and their track "We Stand Alone"
"That song encapsulates why I love hardcore and punk," Leach told those listening. "It's a total protest song. When I was younger, looking for my identity, I didn't fit in with the mainstream, I didn't fit in with the cool kids, I didn't fit in with all these people. Sick of it All were one of those bands that made me proud."
The New York City hardcore favorites Sick of It All released "We Stand Alone" on the EP of the same name in 1991, which also featured a cover of Minor Threat's "Betray," as well as live tracks from a March 1990 Oklahoma City gig. You can check the full EP out just below. "We Stand Alone" was also included on Sick of It All's 1992 album Just Look Around.
Of course, other metal artists and musicians have flown the flag for their favorite hardcore group in some form or another through the years. Lamb of God's Randy Blythe has oft been seen wearing a t-shirt reading "LISTEN TO BAD BRAINS" — which was a collaboration between the actual Bad Brains and streetwear design legends Element. And Slayer, as we all know, recorded an album of their favorite hardcore tracks, the sometimes overlooked Undisputed Attitude. So, all things considered: what's your favorite hardcore song?
Despite all we've already mentioned, there are tons more that could literally be labeled genre anthems. "Rise Above" from Black Flag, maybe? Or how about "Hard Times" from the Cro-Mags? All good choices, for sure. Mine? Well, I believe you can't go wrong with the originals (to me, anyway), Minor Threat, and their track "In My Eyes" as my pick for the best-ever hardcore song.
