The Nick Morris-directed music video for Europe's 1986 single "The Final Countdown" has finally hit one billion plays on YouTube. Which given the amount of times that song has been played at sporting events and used as some sort of joke isn't all too shocking. The best part is the band's statement on the milestone, which directly references the fact that they know damn well the song has been listened to both seriously and jokingly over the years. So good on 'em.
"Unbelievable! One Billion Views!" said the band. "You can’t really make these things up. We’re just five musicians from the suburbs of Stockholm. So lucky to still have the success in the rock world and now something like this. It’s awesome to say the least. Thanks so much to everyone out there who has enjoyed The Final Countdown song and video! We’re sure we have annoyed a few people along the way as well with this song : ) In any case we are super thrilled!”
Europe will soon announce a 40th anniversary European tour. In the meantime, get "The Final Countdown" stuck in your head.
