We know a new Deftones record is coming and we know it's going to be awesome because it's Deftones, but outside that we're not really sure what's up with the new stuff. Save for a peek at some of the new material, we haven't heard a damn thing. So what'll it be like? Well, according to Deftones frontman Chino Moreno in an interview with NME, it's going to be keyboard heavy and will have a lot of tip-offs from Morrissey.
“…It was exactly how we had to do it, a clean slate. I’ve been on this crazy Morrissey tip recently – totally obsessing over his solo records – so I brought a lot of that to the table. On those early solo records, he uses this awesome, Elvis-y delay on his vocal that I’ve been ripping off a ton.” He laughs. “He’s always been a favorite lyricist of mine – the beautiful, poetic melancholy of it all.”
Interesting. Not that that's a bad thing at all! I just wouldn't have put together those two artists into the same sentence, but whatever works. He also touches on the fact that there's some heavy bits in there as well, because of course there is.
“There are definitely heavy elements to the album. But, as usual for us, the jagged and coarse bits only make the sweeter parts even sweeter.”
Ugh, is it September yet?
