Last June, Code Orange revealed they were in the studio with The Smashing Pumpkins guitarist and vocalist Billy Corgan. Now in an interview with Lead Singer Syndrome With Shane Told, Code Orange vocalist Jami Morgan elaborated that the band was working on a handful of demos with Corgan. Morgan added that it was a great learning experience and that a lot of songs they worked on together have not yet been released.
One song that Corgan and Code Orange worked on a little bit was the 2020 single "Out For Blood" produced by Rob Cavallo.
"We went and worked with [Corgan] for a little bit. I'd been sending him a lot of our stuff, still a lot of stuff that hasn't surfaced yet. 'Out For Blood' was one of those [that we worked on] a little bit, not as much as the other ones, but it was definitely one of them. It was kind of that same thing, you know? I just talked to him and I sat down with a notebook – me, [guitarist Reba Meyers, and keyboardist Eric Balderose] went and flew out and I just wrote down every single thing that he said, and just tried to learn and get his perspective on [songwriting].
"You know, Billy [and Rob hadn't] heard our other records at all. They just heard the 10 demos that I sent both of them, and their confidence in just that was really inspiring because it's like, 'damn, you don't even know the journey we've been on, and you don't even know what we've done, but you're telling me the same stuff that I believe about what we're doing without having even heard it. The other stuff' That gave me a lot of confidence in the other stuff moving forward. It was great, though."
Elsewhere in the interview, Morgan notes that Code Orange has roughly 25 songs in the works that aren't like "Out For Blood."
