Some of you may be too young to remember this, but there was a time when Headbangers Ball was the shit. Cosmo Lee has an excellent writeup on his blog about said time along with some awesome clips of the early days of the series. Cosmo also dug up a few sites which try to maintain almost every playlist from the original era of the show (here, here, and here) which showed that for the most part, the videos were mostly glam early on and a lot of grunge late in the show's history. But, it still was the only place to see videos from heavier bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera and even Sacred Reich.
We've made no secret of the fact that some of those early hangs with bands are what inspired us to start Metal Injection in the first place, as we felt nobody was keeping that spirit alive. Now with the advent of low-cost high quality video cameras, every band is producing their own version of a studio update or a goof-off video with ease. Technology changes things, and seemingly has made Headbangers Ball irrelevant. Look no further than it's current timeslot: late Monday nights/early Tuesday mornings at 3 in the fucking morning. Why even bother, MTV?
