The big news last week was Rob Caggiano announcing he is leaving his position as guitarist of Anthrax to focusing on producing full-time. Naturally, every guitarist under the sun thought, "Oh hey…the band need a guitarist… I would be perfect for Anthrax!" Not so fast, buddy!
The band posted a message on their Facebook page earlier this week making it clear that they are not currently auditioning guitarists:
We love you all, and are confident you shred like Yngwie Malmsteen after a case of Red Bull, but to answer all 57,000 messages at once, WE ARE NOT DOING AUDITIONS for lead guitarist.
This could mean a few things:
- The band has already found a replacement and are waiting for the right moment to announce it.
- The band is holding "private" auditions inviting guitarists they think could handle the job, and deciding behind closed doors.
- The band doesn't plan to replace Rob and will be moving forward as a four-piece.
I'm thinking it's either the first or the second one, but we really won't have to wait too long to get an answer. The band will be headlining the Metal Alliance Tour in a few weeks, and seeing them live should give us a good idea of what they decided.
