Nothing like a little heavy psych to brighten the day. Hailing from Rome (yes, as in Rome, Italy), Black Rainbows has been crafting extravagant, stoner-tinged soundscapes for the better part of 15 years now.
Frontman/guitarist Gabriele Fiori also happens to be the founder of the rather prolific Heavy Psych Sounds Records, so to say he knows his heavy psych (no pun intended) is an understatement. The band will be dropping their seventh full length record Cosmic Ritual Supertrip later this month, and today, we have the premiere of a heavy new track from the album for your listening pleasure. Jam out to "Universal Phase" below.
That fuzzy hook that kicks the song off is pretty much all you need to know that it rules. In keeping with the era from which the band draws influence, the video has a decidedly '70s feel, but the modern, organic production of the track gives it a unique flair all its own. Says the band of the song:
UNIVERSAL PHASE is maybe the heaviest song off the new record. It’s heavy, doomy and wild. It kicks you in you your teeth and punches your face. The video was shot in a wrecked industrial area with abandoned cars and you can see us playing and driving a super 70 Ford Taurus. We even color corrected the video to give it a 70s effect.
Cosmic Ritual Supertrip drops digitally May 22 and in physicla formats June 5 via Heavy Psych Sounds. If you like what you hear, be sure to support the band and pick up a copy! Pre-order physical here, and visit their Bandcamp page here.
