METALLICA Updates: Don't Expect New Album Until 2014; To Shoot 3D Movie In Vancouver Next Month; Unveil New Stage Show

Metallica have been doing a lot of press lately. Most recently, we learned the band's schedule calms down in September, when they plan on entering the studio. We assumed this meant a 2013 release was possible, but in a new interview with drummer Lars Ulrich, that doesn't seem to be the case.

In a new interview with Vancouver, Canada, radio station 99.3 ‘The Fox,’ Lars revealed a 2014 release seemed much more likely:

“I wouldn’t use the word ‘close,’ says Ulrich. “I mean, obviously, in the context of, say, the age of planet Earth, we’re pretty close. But in the context of, say, other things, there may be one or two football seasons, or one or two baseball seasons, or one or two hockey seasons… We’ve gotta do this movie, and we’re gonna get back to writing when we’ve done this movie.”

“I would say late ’13 or early ’14. It’s difficult to imagine… I think even late ’13 may be a bit optimistic. I would say hopefully we can realistically get a record out probably about a year and half from now, so maybe early ’14.”

Speaking of the 3D movie, it's all set to shoot next month in Vancouver. The show will feature a brand new stage set up, featuring a 140-foot-by-50-foot stage showcasing giant pieces of art spanning the band's 30 year career, some of which were unveiled at the band's recent shows in Mexico. You can see one example above with the toilet, and plenty more in this Facebook gallery.

Lars reiterates that the movie which the band has already poured 20 million dollars into won't just be a concert movie:

“The rest of the film will be shot the next two or three weeks after the shows in Vancouver, into the middle to the third week of September. [The film] is a narrative, and the rest of the stuff that goes on outside of the concert is not going to feature members of Metallica… in any way, shape or form. It’s a split narrative that kind of runs parallel to the concert.”

I'm sort of developing a curiosity of just how outrageous this movie will turn out to be. Would you go see it?
