OPETH's Mikael Åkerfeldt Was In A Car Accident [UPDATED]

Opeth did not perform as scheduled last night, May 7th, in Minnesota. The band have been on the road, touring with Mastodon and Ghost. Audience members were told after Ghost played that Opeth were unable to perform, as Mikael was unable to get to the venue since he was involved in an accident and had to go to the hospital.

After an extended set from Mastodon, drummer Brann Dailor allegedly updated the crowd letting them know that it was a head injury that caused Mikael to go to the hospital and that's why he wasn't able to perform. Brann reassured the crowd that all will be okay.

While there are reports online that Åkerfeldt broke his arm, Blabbermouth is saying there is no truth to those rumors and Åkerfeldt is expected to make a full recovery and not miss any more dates. The bands play Maryland tomorrow, hopefully we'll get some updates on Mikael's health by then. Our best wishes to Mikael for a speedy recovery.

Update: Opeth have posted the following message on their Facebook page:

Many have already learned that yesterday’s performances at The Myth In St Paul had to be cancelled due to Mikael having an accident.

Right before stage time Mike bumped his head on the tour bus which resulted in a pretty deep cut that required urgent medical attention. Mike was taken to hospital which he left a little later with eight stitches and a nasty headache. He’s doing OK now and we expect him to be up and running (though slightly slower) again for tomorrow’s show and onwards.

Mike & the band were very disappointed not being able to play yesterday but thank everyone for their understanding and for the tons of get-well-wishes Mike has received since.

The band also thanks their friends in Mastodon for playing an extended set that hopefully kept all who attended happy.

So it was much ado about nothing. Mikael just bumped his head, ya'll. He's going to be ok!
