The tributes have been pouring in for Lemmy ever since his tragic passing last week. Banger Films has posted an uncut interview they conducted with the Motorhead frontman from 2005. The entire twelve-minute clip is absolutely worth your time, as Lemmy is as honest as always here, holding nothing back and not giving a fuck. But the part I wanted to highlight specifically is when interviewer Sam Dunn asks Lemmy about his reaction to fans who criticized Motorhead of going "too commercial."
Lemmy's response couldn't be more perfect, lamenting about metalheads' tendencies for inverted snobbery. We highly recommend just hitting play and hearing the answer for yourselves, but for those who can't, I have transcribed his answer:
"Commercial" is a funny word to use as an insult because being commercial just means more people bought your music, which is what you're trying to do when you set out to make it possible for people to hear your music. That's why you do it. And anybody who says they don't want fame and fortune is full of shit, I don't give a fuck who they are. That's rubbish. If you want nobody to hear your music, stay in the living room, nobody will. No problem. But don't be out on stage showing off and telling me you don't want nobody to hear it.
Lemmy continues "Inverted snobbery, it's called. Yea. It's like the communist revolution, everybody who's got money must be a cunt…it's not true, it's not that way. Any generalization is rubbish. So if you say they sold out, maybe they just got lucky. And you can't stand it anymore because of your inverted snobbery. You can't stand it that they're not your baby anymore, that only you and five of your mates know about them. That's the great attraction when you're young."
We'll miss you, Lemmy! Definitely scan back in the video and watch the whole thing.
