Once again, we're pleased to bring you the premiere of a new track from yet another promising young UK band. Mountain Caller is an instrumental metal trio whose music is as informed by the mountainous riffs of bands like Sleep and Elder as it is the progressive and cinematic soundscapes of Tool and Isis. The band is poised to release their debut album Chronicle I: The Truthseeker via the always excellent New Heavy Sounds, and we have the first cut from the album, the aptly-titled "Journey Through the Twilight Desert," for your listening pleasure below.
As the song's title suggests, "Journey Through the Twilight Desert" is indeed a totally righteous musical journey and a great offering of what Mountain Caller are all about. The sci-fi aesthetic of the album's artwork is a fitting visual counterpart to the immense sonic quest contained within. While many instrumental bands tend to rely a little too much on chops and shredding to get their point across, the two gals and guy that make up Mountain Caller opt for a more compositional approach instead, crafting a fine balance of tasteful dynamics and earth crumbling heaviness to carve out a vast valley of prog-doom perfection. Drummer Max says of the track:
"Journey is a perfect introduction to our band. The extreme dynamics, the riffs, and the soundscapes, all of which define the band for us, are all there. Conceptually, the song is about exploration: of an unknown, barren, perilous land, and of the limits of one's own untapped potential and capabilities. It was a turning point for us, the song where we really started to incorporate more off-kilter influences, and where each of us really found our instrumental voices within the band. It’s very dear to us, as is all our music, and we’re so excited for it to be everyone’s first taste of what’s to come!"
Chronicle I: The Truthseeker is out on Nov. 6 via New Heavy Sounds. Pre-order the record here.
