The subgenre of Depressive/Suicidal Black Metal sets out to spurn feelings of pain, anguish, and sorrow. Through pained vocals and ambient soundscapes over crash cymbals and often-rapid guitar play, artists or bands will spill their torment into their compositions. Bands like Xasthur and Woods of Desolation are known for this sound, and in fact this year, ColdWorld released a brilliant example of DSBM with, Autumn. Another great DSBM release to come out this year is available as of last week, and comes from now-North Carolina-based, Maugrim, entitled Primordial Venom.
Clayton Michaels at Invisible Oranges premiered the album on last Wednesday, the four-song album is rife with terrifying shrieks and stirring sounds provided by vocalist, Alexander James. Blackened drums and electric guitars come by way of Élan O'Neal, together they craft bottomed-out poignancy that's capable of moving listeners to outward displays of emotion. Their music, through the aid of artwork and ambience, also invokes some fall, woodland imagery (at least from a personal standpoint.)
Check out the album below and feel free to share your thoughts on it. Primordial Venom saw its release last Friday through Maugrim's Bandcamp page, it is highly recommended that you snag a copy of this great album.
