Volto just sort of came out of nowhere about a month of so back, and people were both excited and a little confused. What was Carey going to sound like outside the context of Tool? Well now we know.
Volto's debut Incitare sounds like the band just hit record and proceeded to jam for the next hour or so, except without all the purposelessness and a lack of direction that most jams seems to have. The band twist and turn through blues, rock, jazz, and even a little bit of progressive sprinkled here and there for an added kick, with seeming ease. It's cool to hear Carey step away from the usual tom-laden bombast of his Tool drumming habits and really step into something different. Naturally, the rest of the musicians on the project (John Ziegler and Lance Morrison) are able to keep up/kill it relentlessly. Above all, the album is a blast to listen to and simply reeks of fun. Go head over to Rolling Stone's website right now and stream it! It'll make your day at least a little bit better, if not a whole lot better.
