Legendary Japanese punk-meets-metal group G.I.S.M. has had plenty of influence on metal bands over the years, but listening to any of their material was damn near impossible. Relapse Records eventually stepped in and reissued their 1983 debut album Detestation in 2020, and is now doing the same for their 1987 sophomore record Military Affairs Neurotic (M.A.N.).
The digital version of Military Affairs Neurotic (M.A.N.) is out now and the physical version is available for pre-order here. I suggest listening to both records back to back if you've got the time today – it's interesting to hear how different they are and how much G.I.S.M. grew between records. Detestation is a lot more punk rock influenced with flashes of metal, while Military Affairs Neurotic (M.A.N.) is a lot closer to the thrash metal of the time.
