DEFTONES Used To Turn Down KORN For Tours Over The "Nü-Metal" Label

"The name of the genre was nü metal, so anything that is new is one day going to be old. And I didn’t to be old with it."

"The name of the genre was nü metal, so anything that is new is one day going to be old. And I didn’t to be old with it."

Deftones released its Around The Fur album in 1997, and both frontman Chino Moreno and guitarist Stephen Carpenter sat down with Metal Hammer to discuss the album and that particular time in metal. The duo says when they were making Around The Fur, they didn't really pay attention to genre labels and what their peers were doing, so they were pretty much unaware of the "nü-metal" label.

Once they were aware, they did their absolute damnedest to stay away from falling into that category. That meant staying away from touring with bands like Korn, who do want to tour with Deftones.

"We did make a very conscious choice of who we were going to play shows with. It was hard to be this young band and having to turn down tours. I can’t remember how many times I turned down Korn! And they got pissed at us. Jonathan would say, ‘Why do you hate us?’ and I didn’t know what to say.

I’d tell him, ‘Dude, I don’t hate you. I love you guys, you’re my friends. But I don’t want to tour with you. I don’t want to be on the Family Values with you and Limp Bizkit.’ The name of the genre was nü metal, so anything that is new is one day going to be old. And I didn’t to be old with it."

So don't sit around waiting for a 90s revival tour to happen with Deftones on the bill, because they sure as hell don't want any part of it.
