A mere few days after we learned of the passing of Ronnie James Dio, metal has lost another musician. Multiple news outlets are reporting that Slipknot bassist Paul Gray was found in an Iowan Mariott hotel dead at the age of 38. An investigation is ongoing but no foul play is suspected. The Examiner is reporting a local source stated it is most likely a drug overdose. Paul was married to model Brenna Paul and the two were expecting their first child together.
This is truly a huge bummer for Slipknot fans everywhere. Paul was not only the bassist of the band, but a huge contributor to the writing process. One has to wonder what the future now holds for Slipknot. The band has been vehement in the past in saying it was a 9-part machine, and every member was equally as important. Would Paul be replaced? If so, would the person replacing him become #2 or #10? Would they drop the number gimmick altogether? When speaking to Joey Jordison on the black carpet at the Revolver Golden Gods he mentioned a 2012 time table for the new record, so they do have plenty of time to figure this out. Overall though, this sucks! Metal musicians need to stop dying.
