The Daily Show Pays Tribute to GWAR's Dave Brockie

GWAR were undoubtably one of the most famous metal acts in the world, if not in sales, in pop culture relevance. With the sad news of frontman Dave Brockie/Oderus Urungus' passing, we've seen some incredibly touching tributes from musicians, and last night the tributes continued on The Daily Show, when Buttholes Surfers' Gibby Haynes and author Amy Yates Wuelfing, who co-wrote the book No Slam Dancing, No Stage Diving, No Spikes: An Oral History of the Legendary City Gardens, appeared on the show. Haynes had the word "Gwar" written in marker on his arm and it led to Jon Stewart saying some nice things about Brockie:

Here is the hi-res version for US residents:

Jon Stewart loves him some GWAR. He name-checked the band just last month in an article about that same club, City Gardens. As MetalSucks points out, GWAR have been name-checked on the Daily Show previously in a 2012 segment on the (G)War on Christmas and as far back as 2001.

In semi-related news, Metal Insider posted an excerpt yesterday from the City Gardens book written by Brockie himself, about Gwar's first show at the venue and how skinheads didn't "get" Gwar, but eventually realized how fun they were. The best quote: "Anyone who has a problem with GWAR realizes pretty quickly it’s like getting angry about The Simpsons."

Meanwhile, GWAR have posted their first message since the tragedy, thanking fans for their support:
