Metallica sure are keeping busy these days. Beyond just releasing overpriced board games, the band just wrapped up recording with the legendary Lou Reed for an as-yet-disclosed release. Now, Rick Rubin is saying the band is focusing on recording a proper follow-up to Death Magnetic, with him on-board once again as a producer. Here is what he told Billboard:
“…about to start writing, and I had a meeting with Lars (Ulrich) in San Francisco…to explore what the focus was going to be this time around. I’m still sort of thinking about what that is going to be. I’ll ask a lot of questions and we’ll probably listen to some of the riffs that they’ve been writing. Usually I’ll hear something that will sort of indicate the direction and then we’ll talk about it from there.”
Wow, so the potential for two new Metallica releases in one year? This may be a bit much. Then again, when talking to RollingStone about the Reed collaboration, the band made it clear that this is not a Metallica record but rather what sounds like a new band altogether. Either way, there will be plenty of ammunition in the coming weeks for us to poke fun at Jaymez, Lars and company.
