If you've been following our site for the last few years, you know that Slipknot is sort of on the backburner for Corey Taylor at the moment, as he focuses on Stone Sour.
But Taylor has made no secret that he intends to spend 2019 working on new material for all the maggots in the world. Taylor recently revealed he's begun the lyrics for the band's new album due out in 2019, and that fans could expect the heaviness of Iowa. Just in case you were worried that the timeline has shifted, Taylor reassured fans in a new interview with HEAVY Music Interviews that Slipknot will be his focus in a few months:
"Obviously I'm going to do Slipknot next year, and it will allow the audience to miss [Stone Sour], which is the best thing in the world you can have. That built-in need for a band to come back just when you think you can't wait any longer, here comes this band and they're like, 'Goddamn, they're so good right now.'"
Taylor was speaking in the context of discussing if there was any new Stone Sour material, of which there is a plethora:
"We started writing new [Stone Sour] music pretty much as soon as we got on the road," he said. "We're just can't be stopped. We're gluttons for punishment at this point. The cool thing is knowing that we've got all this great material, we can kinda enjoy the rest as much as we can because we know when it's time to really start ramping up the demo machine, we're gonna have all this cool stuff to listen to. There's no pressure for us to just run right in."
Taylor went into much more details about the Slipknot recording status in an interview with Kerrang! in June, noting the band had 16 songs written and makes ".5 [The Gray Chapter] look like nobody's business."
"It's only in the demo stages right now. However, we have very serious, tentative plans — and I say that because the best way to make God laugh is to announce your plans out loud — to go into the studio at the beginning of next year and get this fucker going. We have 16 songs written right now, and they are fucking dangerous.
"I loved .5, but this album, to me, makes .5 look like nobody's business. This is Iowa levels of heavy. And I have to go out and tour this shit at my age — I can feel those songs in my back! I am really, really excited about it, and I talk to the guys in Slipknot all the time. I talk to Clown either every day, or every other day. I've been talking to Jim, V-man, Jay, Mick, Craig, Chris, Sid. We're all really, really, really excited about this stuff, and it's coming together really fucking well. So be prepared for 2019 — which, weirdly, is the 20th anniversary of our first album. Shit's about to get fucking real again! So take that as you will."
With new Slipknot, and likely new Tool, new Testament, Rob Zombie and Nine – 2019 is shaping up to be an amazing year for heavy metal.
