Video games don’t come much more metal than the Jack Black-fronted action-adventure Brutal Legend. Released in 2009, the game features over 100 classic metal cuts, running the gamut from “Symptom of the Universe” to “The Beautiful People.” For all intents and purposes, there’s something for everyone here. Although, surprisingly, it’s the guest appearances in the game that really steal the show. Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Halford, and Lemmy Kilmister appear in the game, complete with fictional in-game backstories that are all fantastic. Besides, it’s worth playing alone just to hear Lemmy refer to bass strings as being as “Thick as a baby’s arm.”

4. Sacred 2: Fallen Angel (Blind Guardian) 0 Video Games That Feature Iconic Metal Artists" width="1280" height="720" /> via: youtube.com

Persistence may not have paid off, but a lack of care ultimately did. That’s the surprising story of German power metallers Blind Guardian’s first foray into the video game sphere. Because despite attempts to get their likeness into a video game since the ‘90s, they were never given the green light and they subsequently gave up on their quest. However, that all changed with the advent of the RPG Sacred 2: Fallen Angel. Released in 2008, the game not only had its very own theme song courtesy of the band, entitled “Sacred Worlds,” but it also featured them playing in it as well. Blind Guardian can finally tick this one off their bucket list.

3. MTV’s Beavis and Butthead (GWAR)

GWAR are far from just being a throwaway addition to the Beavis and Butthead video game. No, in fact, they’re integral to the plot. It followed numerous appearances in the television show, with creator Mike Judge finding them as the perfect group for his two dopey cartoon creations to gush over. In the 1994 video game, Beavis and Butthead misplace their GWAR concert tickets, leading to them going on a search to find them. Of course, the game reaches its crescendo when the two finally get to the show to catch the GWAR performance, with the band grotesquely rendered just like the real thing!

2. Grand Theft Auto IV (Max Cavalera) 0 Video Games That Feature Iconic Metal Artists" width="1280" height="720" /> via: gameinformer.com

It doesn’t get much more metal than listening to some extreme metal cuts while Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera guides you through them. That’s what players got with Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned. The game featured some fantastic bands on the LCHC radio station, including the likes of Bathory, Cannibal Corpse, and unsurprisingly, Sepultura. But with Max Cavalera in the mix, the station could really get its devil horns in the air. Cavalera screams the track names like he would while spitting some vicious lyrics, with the results being the same for every metalhead who played the game: headbang galore.

When the first Guitar Hero game was released in 2005, it was met with great critical and commercial success. It became a cultural phenomenon, giving gamers the ability to play along to some of their favorite songs. Since then, there have been several more iterations of the series. Fans of heavy metal were certainly pleased as well to see the genre’s representation in the franchise, with the likes of Metallica, King Diamond, Rammstein and more gracing the titles. This series single-handedly introduced metal to a whole new audience of music fans and gamers alike, so it’s fully deserving of taking the No. 1 spot.
