Rockstar Mayhem Fest Tried To Book PANTERA Reunion; Failed.
Oh no, John Resse, what have you done? Reese is one of the co-founders of Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, and he was recently interviewed by Examiner.com and asked what his dream headliners would be:
“Oh man. Pantera, Iron Maiden, System Of A Down, and Rammstein. Those four.”
When the interviewer pressed about if he's approached Pantera, he has said that he indeed has:
“I’ve even approached them about doing it. Do I think it’s going to happen? I have no idea. I know that a heavy, heavy tragedy happened and there are some hard feelings, but it’s up to those three dudes to decide if they ever want to do something or not. If they would decide to do I would support it wholeheartedly and I would do whatever I could to be involved. But it’s up to them.”
But who would play guitar?
“Well with somebody on guitar. I think that hopefully it happens. I think the fans deserve it and who knows what the three remaining guys have to say, but I think it would be badass to see Pantera out there.”
Here's why I asked Reese "what have you done?"
Pantera's living members have been asked for the last 10 years about a possible reunion. Of course, Anselmo and Rex Brown aren't against it, having played Pantera covers many times. But, the one hold out, the big one, is drummer Vinnie Paul. He had to witness his brother die right on stage and it's something that he has yet to get over. He hasn't even spoken to Phil Anselmo outside of email exchanges regarding Pantera re-releases.
Previously, Paul has said he was not interested, it would never happen, and "Dime was Pantera." In fact, the last time, we mentioned this, Paul gave a be-all-end-all reasoning for why this will never happen:
“If you had an ex-wife, and it was a pretty bitter split, you might not ever want to talk to her again. Who cares if everybody in the family and your friends want you to say hello again? It’s your choice whether you want to do it or not. And I think a lot of people are selfish. They say, ‘Oh, he oughtta just kiss and make up with Phil and everything will be cool. And then they can go get Zakk Wylde and everything’s gonna be great.’ No, everything’s not gonna be great.”
But, I feel like Reese has just opened up a can of worms. I feel every interview either Paul or Anselmo give for the next six months will now feature a question about this. I guess I can't complain, because I'll still write about it.
But don't hold your breath for a proper reunion.
