Maynard Says Driving Factor Behind New Album Delay Was Lack Of Compromise

"When you get successful, you think you're right about everything."

Yesterday came the absolutely gargantuan news that not only would Tool release their long-awaited new album Fear Inoculum on August 30, but that their entire catalog would finally be available digitally. The same day, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan guested on the The Joe Rogan Experience podcast and talked a little bit about the album and why it took so long.

Keenan said the main reason for the delays boiled down to people not wanting to compromise on anything throughout the process, and he's just happy that the album is done and ready to be released.

"Fuck, what a weight lifted off my chest. It took a lot of work. The four of us are a lot of fucking work just to get anywhere. Oh my God — everything's a fucking committee meeting and always gets shot down."

He also elaborated a little more on the delays later in the conversation.

"Success. When you get successful, you think you're right about everything. You're pretty sure as that individual, 'I am right and you are wrong.' I'm successful and we're successful because of me, not because of you. 'It's not that bad with us… There's a dynamic of, 'I want this and I've always gotten my way and that's why we're successful, because I don't compromise.'"
