Jim Root Addresses Fan Criticism of Lack of Solos On New SLIPKNOT Album

Wait, there is a lack of solos on the new Slipknot album?

My first thought when seeing this bit of news was, there's a lack of solos on Slipknot's We Are Not Your Kind? I honestly hadn't noticed because the whole thing seems to flow seamlessly from one moment to the next, track by track and it's just excellent.

But apparently some fans have noticed this and it's something that Jim Root addressed in a recent interview with The Art & Span Show. Here's how Jim replied:

“I see a lot of comments like, ‘Where are the guitar solos on this record?’ and stuff like that. Well, obviously, Mick [Thomson, guitar] and I are very into guitar; we love playing guitar, love doing solos over every song, but that didn’t occur to me. I was more concerned about the arrangements and making a good song top to bottom.

“There is a solo on ‘Spiders,’ albeit a kind of a non-traditional solo, but that’s what I love. The point I’m trying to make is I get to think outside of the box and approach guitar playing in a way that I would never approach it with a song like ‘Spiders’ because Clown wrote that song and it didn’t come from my mind, so it’s hard for me to process it.”

This reminds me of the old saying 'Knowing what to play makes you a good guitarist. Knowing when not to play makes you a good musician.'

These dudes clearly know when to play what. By  the way, the solo on "Spiders" is really sick…
