UK Venues Are Banning The Selfie Stick Because People Are That Stupid

It's as dumb as it looks. I promise.

It's as dumb as it looks. I promise.

In the event you live in a world that doesn't consist of you taking a picture of yourself twenty times a day, let me enlighten you briefly on a new nightmare called "the selfie stick." It's a pole that you connect your phone to and then hold out to take a picture of yourself at a distance so you… can pretend to have friends? That or Snapchat more full nudes of yourself because you're lonely. I don't know.

"Greg, that sounds terrible," I can hear you saying right now, and I agree with you! What makes it even worse is that people are using them at shows at a frequency often enough for some venues in the U.K. to start banning them. The Academy Music group, owner of venues such as O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire and O2 Academy Birmingham among 14 others, has released the following statement via Billboard:

"The O2 do not allow selfie sticks into the arena due to safety considerations and so as not to impact the view of other fans. We welcome selfies, but leave the stick at home please … This is in keeping with our existing policy that prohibits the filming and photography during a performance with iPads and other tablet devices and includes any such obstructions for the satisfaction of other customers."

Using your phone at a venue has been the point of contention among fans and bands for the past few years, and ultimately that's a subjective thing… but selfie sticks? Are you serious? Get that out of here.
