SYSTEM OF A DOWN Bassist Thinks Maybe The Band Needs A Psychiatrist To Get Through Their Issues

St. Anger-style, y'all.

The legend of the hope for a new System Of A Down record continues! Back in July, things really hit a roadblock when guitarist Daron Malakian said the band isn't making a new album because of vocalist Serj Tankian, and that Tankian didn't even want to make Hypnotize or Mesmerize in 2005. Tankian issued his own lengthy statement as a response detailing why he didn't want to make those records, why the band went on hiatus and the possibility of eventually doing music.

Then we found out that Malakian's new Scars On Broadway album has some material meant for a new System Of A Down record, and that Takian was doing the same with his new record. So it's pretty ill-fated at this point, but what does Corey Taylor bassist Shavo Odadjian think?

In an interview with KROQ's The Kevin & Bean Show, Odadjian says he's been game to do a new record but obviously if everyone isn't on board then it isn't happening. He adds that he doesn't hold grudges against the other guys in the band but "I can’t force anybody into a studio. I can’t force anyone anywhere. And it won’t be good for us either."

“If it was my way, it would be now. But it’s not, it takes four to tango… I’m hoping—because like I said, for me, we have so much material. We have material for like the last 10 – 12 years. We all write. So I personally have a lot, Daron has a lot, I know Serj got a lot, but I don’t know… I don’t know what’s going on.

I’m hoping, I’m wishing, you know? We still love each other. There’s nothing… No one’s done anything wrong. No one’s angry, it’s not like someone’s done something to someone and they can’t take it back. Nothing like that’s occurred. I think it’s just an artistic thing.”

Interestingly, Odadjian notes these problems have been around for far longer than fans have been aware of them:

"Anything that you've read in the last two years, it's been around for the last ten years," he explained. "It's just now coming out because social media is out there."

When one of the hosts joked about pulling a Metallica Some Kind Of Monster and getting a therapist or a psychiatrist involved, Odadjian responded by saying he considered having a band psychiatrist in the studio with them.

“I’ve had that conversation. That would be cool, like maybe someone has to sit in the middle and be like ‘this is what it means.’ And ‘this is what he means.’ But it’s not like someone has done something. There’s no like where he could be ‘oh he did this for that reason.’…”

It seems very evident we'll be getting a new Tool album before we're getting a new System of a Down album at this point.
