Did New York Times Magazine Rip Off DREAM THEATER's New Album Cover?

Nah, they just used the same stock photo.

Nah, they just used the same stock photo.

Is there somebody at New York Times Magazine that is a Dream Theater fan?

A few days after Dream Theater revealed the cover art for their new album, Distance Over Timeit seems a very similar version of the artwork appeared on the cover of New York Times Magazine. A fan noticed and pointed it out:

Gail Bichler, the magazine’s Design Director, issued a statement saying it's pure coincidence:

“Yes, these things look remarkably similar but we had never seen the album. As far as I can tell the album and our cover were released within days of each other. Sometimes people independently come up with the same idea at the same time.”

Dream Theater even got in on the fun:

A rep for the band noted that the band did purchase a stock image that the band's graphics team then modified. It's clear that the New York Times indeed found that same stock image.

It seems as though both entities used this stock photo as a base, so it's hard to leap to the "rip off" conclusion.

Still, quite a happy coincidence.
