The first ever Chicago Open Air festival, headlined by Rammstein, Slipknot and Korn, was, by the accounts I've heard at least, a fun time had by all. Sadly, for one individual, the event ended abruptly in tragedy.
Chicago Sun-Times reports that 29-year-old Robert Smucz died at the event after falling two stories and hitting pavement.
Smucz was watching the show from the mezzanine level of Toyota Park. Witnesses claimed that Smucz was sitting on a railing in the mezzanine level of the park, when he slipped and fell to his death.
Smucz was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead, an hour after the incident happened. The Cook County medical examiner’s office found that died of multiple injuries from the accidental fall.
Smucz's girlfriend posted a tribute on Facebook calling Smucz "one of the nicest people I had ever met and such an incredible person" and that he " always wanted everyone around him to be happy." She later added "He spent his last day doing what he liked the most- hanging out with his best friend, my brother, and his girlfriend. He was so happy!"
Our thoughts are with Smucz's family and friends during this difficult time. You can read Smucz's obituary here.
