Bonehunter – "The Reek of the Reaper's Scythe"
This Baby Bathory business has some whiff of truth, their self-proclaimed "Devil Metal Punk" tag sums it up even better. Brutal live-sounding blasts from a scabby underbelly of something most bands can't make translate well in the studio, anxious to hear the album especially with the involvement of genre-swinging Finnish legend Läjä Äijälä of Terveet Kädet.
Festerday – "One Who Strangles Stars and Suns"
From the 'Cadaveric Virginity' EP out this week on Season of Mist, Finland continues to serve up a stew of whatever it wants to appropriate from the metal pot. Blastbeats, ferocious guitar flurries, death/grind at the core but carrying heft with riffs as heavy as the stinking corpse of Jackie Coogan himself (who does not appear despite the band's name).
Meadow's End – "Soulslain"
Culled from the forthcoming 'Sojourn' LP, walls of dramatic symphonic melodic death metal hailing from Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. Originally slated as a monthly You Tube installment song cycle, Black Lion documents the journey now as a full length CD reissue. Majestic movements amidst gutteral vox.
Atrament – "Plague Upheaval"
With Bay Area ties to Necrot, Vastum and others, this one is a no-brainer for Gimme thumbs up. Anarchic blast of D-Beat, doom, death and disease waging sonic weaponry on your brains.
Dead Cross – "Bela Lagosi's Dead"
Had to throw one Halloween spin over Gimme this week courtesy Mssrs. Lombardo/Patton/Pearson/Crain, as heard on Chris Krovatin's special Bram Stoker-themed edition of "Bleeder's Digest" this week. Happy Helloween all.
