Have you been watching the Watchmen series on HBO? I've been seeing mixed reviews, and seeing that it's Damon Lindelof, I wanted to wait until at least the end of season 1 to make sure there is no pointless cliffhanger that doesn't go anywhere, like I felt with all the time I invested into his breakout series, Lost.
But, I can say that what I've heard of the score so far sounds fantastic, and makes me want to check out the series for totally different reasons.
So far, we've heard volume 1 and volume 2 of the score, and while we haven't gotten a full third volume yet, the duo released one of the tracks, a brooding, vocal-less cover of David Bowie's classic "Life on Mars." Take a listen:
Reznor spoke to Rolling Stone earlier this year, explaining his decision to release the score in parts:
Well, we’re having some fun with the way that it’s released. There are a number of reasons behind doing that. One is there is quite a bit of music, and I think when you drop a big chunk — a couple hours’ worth of music — on the public these days, that’s a good way to get 90 percent of it ignored. So breaking it up is good. The motivation wasn’t to monetize it three times; that wasn’t what the deciding factor was. And we’re putting it out on vinyl because we’ve been on a physical-object kick. Speaking for myself, that’s for nostalgic reasons. I’m looking at a shelf full of vinyl albums right now, and it that feels a little different than something that’s a cloud-based file, which feels a little disposable. They also tie into Watchmen. Let’s put it this way: We overthought it.
