SPYLACOPA (CANDIRIA) Announces New Album Beneath The Earth That Lies Beneath The Sea

"Fans of Boards Of Canada, Aphex Twin and Autechre might have a thing to say about it."

John LaMacchia

Spylacopa, the project headed up by Candiria guitarist John LaMacchia, will release a new record Beneath The Earth That Lies Beneath The Sea on May 14. According to LaMacchia, "fans of Boards Of Canada, Aphex Twin and Autechre might have a thing to say about it," which should lay it out pretty bare that this is very much an ambient, keyboard-heavy effort.

Here's what LaMacchia had to say about the album.

“The title of the album came to me first. This looming question of what exists beneath the earth that lies at the bottom of the deepest ocean. It’s a very frightening thought to me and you can certainly hear that in the music. On the contrary it’s fascinating to think how peaceful it might be. This sacred place, unspoiled by humanity. Once I had the title I just kept creating music with it in mind and I wound up with this body of work.”

Personally, the title reminds me of the lyrics from "Once In A Lifetime" by Talking Heads, whose poetic ramblings are as unsettling as this record title when you really try to visualize what they mean. Spylacopa is streaming "Part 1 – Minauros" right now, which I recommend you listen to with headphones on and at a time when you're alone with nothing else to distract you.
