Darkthrone is now streaming their new single "Hate Cloak" and it's nearly 10 minutes of killer heavy metal. That means guitar harmonies, huge riffs, and a grounded rhythm section all moving at a fairly glacial pace. In other words, it rules.
The band explains the song's length and speed, saying it's a tribute to the metal bands of yesteryear. Though Fenriz does assure everyone that there are plenty of fast bits on the new record.
"'Hate Cloak is certainly the slowest song on the album, there are plenty of 'fast' parts on Ted's songs, middle tempos and slow as well," said Fenriz. "The whole point of us having long songs is variation in tempos/pace, hence the epicness”
"When I was a kid growing up with metal I kept looking for bands with long songs," added Nocturno Culto. "Black Sabbath had many, and Celtic Frost’s Dawn Of Meggido had a long song, so I put that on in the record store and discovered another dimension of metal. Candlemass’ Epicus Doomicus Metallicus had only long songs, so I think I bought that without even listening, and it was one of my best buys ever – an eternal inspiration for my entire career."
Darkthrone will release Eternal Hails on June 25. Pre-orders are available here.
