The Monday Grind: NEON HISS Volume II Will Grind Into Your Heart

It’s Monday and Mondays suck, so let’s grind it out with Neon Hiss Volume II.

Neon Hiss – Volume II

It’s Monday and Mondays suck, so let’s grind it out with Neon Hiss Volume II.

How many cyber grind bands do you know? If you’re already deep into grindcore, you can probably name quite a few, or maybe you even listen to some and don’t realize it. But that could also be the case even if you only listen to grind casually. For those that don’t know, cybergrind drum machine driven and utilizes a lot of synth effects. Basically, it’s meant to sound like the future is reaching back in time and grinding your head into the concrete.

Neon Hiss out of Toronto, Ontario has just put up their second cybergrind offering. Those that have heard Holy Grinder will recognize Ei Cee on bass, guitar, drum programming and vocals along side lead vocalist Katherine. And if you’re expecting more Holy Grinder, you’re looking in the wrong place, but I think you’re gonna like what you hear regardless.

At only five tracks, Volume II comes in and gets out real fast. The EP is only a little under five minutes. It’s drive-by cybergrind. “Knife Edge Death Match” opens the album with big ol’ blasts from Ei as Katherine’s vocals come roaring in. If you start to get flashbacks to old Agoraphobic Nosebleed, you’re not alone. The second track “Public Space Isn’t So Safe” is pure, raging grind that almost sounds like something The Locust would conjure up.

It’s not all blasts and unabashed destruction though. The hits plenty of heavy notes. “Amateur Garbage Man” and the start of “I Used To Hate Cell Phones But Now I Just Hate Untitled Songs” are both plenty heavy and come down with veracity. Especially the later of the tracks. One part in particular calls to mind Daughter’s “I’m Don’t Give a Shit About Wood, I’m Not a Chemist” from their weirdo grind album Canada Songs.

If you need a quick break from this Monday, or are hoping to get through it quickly, Neon Hiss got you covered. In fact, they're gonna grind right into your heart. And if you’re thirsty for more, there’s also Volume I, released in 2018. Cybergrinders will be into this immediately, other grinders will find something to love as well.  Get grinding on this one!

I'm here and here.
