It’s the weekend! What better way to get it started than with the latest installment of “Funeral Doom Friday”. This weekly column looks to shed some light onto some of the darkest, most depressing, and discordant metal out there. Funeral Doom stems from the deepest depths of Death-Doom and Dirge music. Each week, the goal is to highlight some of the newest music or rediscover classic works from some of the earliest bands and originators such as Australia’s Mournful Congregation, United States’s Evoken, UK’s Esoteric and the Finnish Thergothon. Feel free to share your opinions and suggestions in the comments!

This week takes Funeral Doom Friday to the Midtjylland of Denmark in the city of Aarhus. The Scandinavian nation has nested many noteworthy bands throughout the entire breadth of metal, most notably being Mercyful Fate. Obviously, today's feature plays a very different kind of metal than King Diamond and company. Nevertheless, Woebegone Obscured has been creating intriguing Funeral Doom for over a decade now and they are back again with a small, new release.

The Danish quartet is making a return after a two year layoff between albums with a new, self-titled EP. These two tracks are comprised of roughly 20 minutes of blackened Funeral Death/Doom that actually sets up for an impending full-length album that Woebegone Obscured is currently working on. The group chose to release this couple of songs ahead of the album on their own. This upcoming full-length album will be their third total and first one since 2013's Marrow of Dreams. If the two tracks released this week are any indication to what the full-length album will sound like, then there is great reason to believe Woebegone Obscured's third LP will be an excellent slab of funerary metal. The first track, "Woebegone" and second track, "Obscured" are rife with precise executions of the foundational elements of Funeral doom that breeds promise for the upcoming release.

Check out the new couple of tracks below! They are also available for purchase through Woebegone Obscured's Bandcamp page as a digital format or an impending, limited vinyl release. Keep your eyes peeled for more information on the band. If you have any suggestions or recommendations for future column features, feel free to share!
