Dramatic Heavy Metal Film Metalhead Announces Limited US Theater Run & VOD Availibility

Posted by on February 13, 2015 at 12:53 pm

We've already gushed about the new Icelandic fictional heavy metal drama, Metalhead, but if you don't believe us, take a look at the trailer:

Here's a description of the film from the press release:

Fueled by a remarkable breakout performance by actress Thora Bjorg Helga, Bragason's drama of loss, faith, redemption, and heavy metal begins with a farming accident in the 1980's that sends a young girl named Hera and her parents into a tail-spin of grief over the death of her heavy metal music-obsessed older brother. A decade later, Hera is transformed into a surly headbanger, dressed in black leather and a Slayer t-shirt, clutching her dead brother's electric guitar as she howls anthems of rage to a barn full of cows. Seemingly trapped in a haunted landscape of slaughterhouses and barren winter fields, making all the wrong choices in her life, Hera slowly and painfully comes to terms with her family's loss and the sound of her own true voice.

It sounds like a pretty interesting film and it's been getting rave reviews. Now, you can decide for yourself. Limited showings have been announced at theater chains nationwide. Here are the planned screenings:

Philadelphia's PhilaMOCA  (Feb 22 – 23)
Grand Rapids, MI's Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts  (Feb 27-Mar 5)
New York's New Nordic Cinema Series (Scandinavia House)  (March 18-20)
New York's Cinema Village (March 20 – 26)
Los Angeles' Laemmle NoHo 7 (March 27 – April 2)
Seattle's SIFF Uptown Theatre (Feb. 27 – March 1)
Portland's Hollywood Theatre (April 10 – 16)

More screenings will be announced here. If you don't feel like leaving your house, the film will be available on VOD rental and downloads starting April 3rd.

Metal is really having its moment at the cinema. We profiled an awesome looking horror movie named Deathgasm yesterday, also worth checking out.
