Devin Townsend's style is a hard one to pin down. Dude got heavy in Strapping Young Lad, took a turn for the atmospheric heavy in The Devin Townsend Band, got weird and eclectic with The Devin Townsend Project, got country with Casualties Of Cool, and explored a lot with his solo stuff.
So now, nearly 10 years into The Devin Townsend Project, Townsend himself says it may be time to retire that sound sometime soon. In an interview with Silver Tiger Media, Townsend says Transcendence could mark the end of that sound, and he's currently trying to figure out where to go from here.
"To be perfectly honest, I think I'm really close to the end of that style. Maybe not the end of it, but it feels like it really needs to morph into something else and Transcendence was almost like, literally that – a transcendent piece of work so that I can move onto the next thing. And what that is I'm currently battling – if you wanna look at it that way – to find out what that direction is."
Dude's extremely talented, and made a career off basically doing whatever he wants. So is anyone really nervous to hear what's going to happen next?
