There are two types of covers. There are the ones where the band completely reimagines the song in the style of their other material, and then there are others where it's almost like a direct copy of the original, perhaps with a bit more spunk.
Stone Sour's new cover of "Gimme Shelter" falls into the latter category. While it's by no means bad or embarrassing, it just… is. The band teamed up with Halestorm's Lzzy Hale to create the cover.

The band actually went out of their way to capture the same tones as the original. Guitarist Josh Rand told Rolling Stone:
“To stay true to the original recordings of these songs, we tried to recreate the sounds and tones that the original artist used. This was both fun and challenging, but the end result was worth all the hard work everyone put into achieving it.”
They definitely achieved their goal. The track appears on the band's vinyl-only EP, Straight Outta Burbank which will be all covers. It's being released on Record Store Day, November 27th and will also feature covers of ad Brains, Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe and Slayer. I'm sure we'll be hearing more soon.
