Amon Amarth frontman Johan Hegg participated in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session yesterday to promote his new Viking film, Northmen and there were some interesting questions asked. Here are some highlights:
Do any of his family members listen to Amon Amarth's music?
Well, my wife does, and my sister and her family, so yes. They are fans.
Would he ever consider doing clean vocals?
With the right idea sure why not, but not just for the sake of adding clean vocals.
Favorite metal album:
That's almost impossible to say, but in no specific order I would say "Ride The Lightning" – Metallica, "Season In The Abbyss" – Slayer, "Master of Reality" – Black Sabbath, "Piece of Mind" – Iron Maiden… and many more.
His favorite ManOWar album:
Any album up until Kings Of Metal are great in my book, but I'd say either that album or Battle Hymns. Of course I meant it! Whenever we play in front of an awesome crowd who goes completely nuts, and has a good time I feel they have a true Viking sprit!
Book recommendations for getting into Norse mythology:
Well, the Poetic Edda of course, but also the Icelandic sagas such as "Njal's Saga", "Egil Skallagrimsson's Saga" or "The Saga of the Jomsvikings", but there are many more, and there are a lot of good books that offers a good introduction though I can't think of any names from the top of my head. There are also a pretty cool Danish comic book series called Valhalla that is basically the mythology in comic book form, but I'm not sure if they are available in English.
The first metal album he bought:
The first metal albums I had I taped from friends, but the first one I bought was either AC/DC Back In Black, KISS – Rock N Roll Over or Iron Maiden – Number of the beast.
