RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE Bassist Explains VMA Protest & Calls LIMP BIZKIT "One of the Dumbest Bands in the History of Music"

So that's why he did it!

So that's why he did it!

Remember back when the Video Music Awards were actually worth watching? Some might say 2000 is past the point where the VMAs were no longer watchable, but not to me. It was like the Super Bowl to me. One of the most noteworthy happenings of the event was Limp Bizkit beating out Rage Against the Machine in the "Best Rock Video" category… a category, by the way, that no longer exists at the VMAs.

Anyway, after Limp won, you may recall Rage bassist Tim Commerford ran up onto the stage and jumped up on the set in protest of the win. If you do not recall, here is the footage:

MetalSucks points out that Commerford was on a sports radio talk show recently to talk about his new, band Future User and was asked about the incident.

Basically, it all boiled down to Commerford was very proud of the video they produced for "Sleep Now In The Fire" which was directed by Michael Moore and found them performing on the steps of the NY Stock Exchange and causing a ruckus. He thought it was a great video and it deserved to win. And, the band were performing that night as well, so he assumed it was a lock. He was even hounding producers. He thought the video had a great protest message and when the VMAs decided to give the award to Limp Bizkit, who he called one of the dumbest bands in the history of music, he was pissed. So he pulled a Kanye West about 15 years before Kanye West did.

You can hear him describe it at about 13:45 of this interview:

While I understand his frustration, and the retelling of the story is pretty hilarious, it seems a bit petty that he did this. I do know the rest of the band were humiliated by the act, as singer Zack De La Rocha immediately left the venue.
