Kate Bush is experiencing a resurgence in popularity thanks to Stranger Things 4 using her song "Running Up That Hill." Bush certainly doesn't mind, as she recently commented to BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour: "What's really wonderful, I think, is that this is a whole new audience who, in a lot of cases, they'd never heard of me. And I love that — the sort of all these really young people hearing the song for the first time and discovering it is, well, I think it's very special." And before we dive into this cover, let's make one thing clear – Kate Bush rules and you should listen to her music.
All that being said, this is also the perfect time to revisit Sergeant Thunderhoof's 2020 cover of Bush's 1985 track "Cloudbusting." The original has a very punctuated, almost marching feel to it with its staccato strings and upfront drums, whereas Sergeant Thunderhoof's is a gargantuan doom track that takes on a life and personality of its own. I mean seriously, this is a masterclass in how to cover a song.
The cover was part of Sergeant Thunderhoof's split with Tony Reed named Beyond The Pale: Volume One, which you can grab here. You can also check out their brand new record This Sceptred Veil here. It's got riffs for days and days.
