New York City has given the green light to MTV to hold its annual Video Music Awards as originally scheduled at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on August 30th.

The news was confirmed on Monday during Governor Andrew Cuomo's briefing about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. During the hour-long plus presentation, there was a brief mention of the event on a slide and Cuomo noted “The event will follow all safety guidance, including limited or no audience.”

MTV offered a press release assuring that safety is most important to them: “the health and safety of artists, fans, industry, staff, and partners is of the utmost importance.”

They noted that producers have been working with Barclays management and local officials to implement best practices and social distancing requirements.

This will be the first public gathering in a large venue in New York City since the quarantine began. “We’re very excited to once again host this legendary night of music, and are especially proud of the impact it will have on our Brooklyn community through the creation of local jobs,” said Oliver Weisberg, CEO of Barclays Center.

Now if only they could feature some metal or hard rock. We'll see.
