AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young was laid to rest today (November 28th) at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, Australia. A who's who of rock royalty attended, including former members of the band – former vocalist Brian Johnson, former estranged drummer Phil Rudd. Mark Evans and Cliff Williams were also in attendance.
ABC notes that Malcolm's Gretsch guitar, known as "The Beast" was rested upon his coffin during the service, with his brother, Angus, was carrying the guitar out to the hearse while the coffin was being loaded. The family included a written statement in the program thanking everybody for all of their support:
“Malcom’s family thank you for your love, support and overwhelming outpouring of kindness during this time. They ask that you remember Malcolm as a man who was generous and had immense talent. His enormous legacy to his family and the music industry worldwide will never be forgotten.”
In an amazing moment, a pipe band performed a medley of songs including AC/DC's classic “It’s A Long Way To the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)” as family and friends were exiting the cathedral. Here is a video report from the funeral:
