Can we admit that 2017, overall, sucks for new metal yet or nah? Anyway, this edition includes some reunion releases, metal that metalheads will like, and more! To the metals…
At The Drive-in – n • ter a • li • a
Genre: Post-hardcore/punk
Origin: El Paso, Texas
Label: Rise

Oh hey! It's been a while since I covered an Omar Rodriguez-Lopez release, and this one is a doozy. On their first record together in seventeen years, the explosive post-hardcore/experimental collective are back with the same fury and madness they brought back in the day. I think I still prefer The Mars Volta, but I'll take anything that features Omar and Cedric working together.

Full Of Hell – Trumpeting Ecstasy
Genre: Grindcore
Origin: Ocean City, Maryland
Label: Profound Lore

Changing gears completely, I bring you here are the brief pummeling tracks of Full of Hell. This release is aggressive, dark, and to the fucking point. No ambient filler and no intro tracks, so stretch before putting this one on.

God Dethroned – The World Ablaze
Genre: Blackened Death Metal
Origin: Beilen, Netherlands
Label: Metal Blade

This week, I'm apparently (mostly) keeping the folks that like "real" metal happy. Enjoy the blackened, war-obsessed assault that is God Dethroned's tenth studio album. It also marks their first release since their second reunion. God, bands that do that shit are frustrating.

Hate – Tremendum
Genre: Death metal
Origin: Warsaw, Poland
Label: Napalm
Buy now on Amazon.com
Here's another straight up metal band dropping their tenth record. They grow up so fast. Anyway, these guys are like God Dethroned, if they toned down the blackened angle. They seem closer to Vader in this regard. Also, in lazily looking up this band, I discovered that there are about twenty bands simply named "Hate." These guys all need hugs. Death metal fans, get this record and then hug them at a future show.

Motionless in White – Graveyard Shift
Genre: Metalcore
Origin: Scranton, Pennsylvania
Label: Roadrunner

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand, here's where I lose you. Motionless in White have become a rather important band in the modern metalcore scene. Their mix of Marilyn Manson imagery, electronic boops, and the heavy verse/catchy chorus thing appeals to a lot of people. Not my thing, but I saw them live once, and it was a fun show.

The Sword – Greetings From…
Genre: Stoner/Hard rock
Origin: Austin, Texas
Label: Razor & Tie
Buy now on Amazon.com
The Sword are a band that I've happened to see a handful of times, and each time I'm reminded that they are a great live band. The little I've heard of this record captures what their live experiences is like. Riffs are fuzzier, rhythms seem heavier, and they just seem better. Vocals leave something to be desired occasionally, but overall solid.
