SLAYER's 10 Most Underrated Songs

"New Faith" – God Hates Us All (2001)

That, no pun intended, goddamn opening riff thooooooo. One of Kerry King’s simplest, and catchiest Slayer-ism’s ever; “New Faith” is probably the secret weapon on God Hates Us All. “Disciple” “Bloodline” and “Payback” are probably the most popular tunes on this record, but “New Faith” fucking rips people! Go back and give it a listen and try not head banging through your car dashboard/work desk during that ending breakdown.

"Behind The Crooked Cross" – South of Heaven (1988)

Everyone knows the Yin and Yang, Reign In Blood/South Of Heaven Slayer story [right?]. After cracking the sound barrier on their 1986 breakthrough, the band’s uber hyped 1988 follow up slowed things down a notch and went in a totally different direction. Thank Satan [laughs as you eternally rot!] they did, because we ended up with some rockin’ mid paced numbers like "Behind The Crooked Cross." Compare this song to something off Reign In Blood and it feels like friggin ZZ Top but it still rules. This is as close to cruising down the coast with the top down music as Slayer gets.

"Snuff" / "Public Display of Dismemberment" – World Painted Blood (2011)

“Snuff” or "Public Display of Dismemberment." Take your pick; we’ve got an official toss-up. These two songs helped make World Painted Blood, the ‘holy shit!’ return to form Slayer fiends came to love. "Snuff" is a good ol’ fashioned thrash-terpiece. We’re talking guitar solos and whiplash galore. "Public Display Of Dismemberment" feels like a lost Reign In Blood track injected with modern day extremity [re: blast beats]. Ultimately, choosing between one or the other was just a sick exercise in futility; so uh; it's a tie! Enjoy this double dose of modern Slayer madness.

"Crionics" – Show No Mercy (1983)

Check Slayer at their most Iron Maiden-y; because it rules. How cool would it be to hear this galloping, air-guitar rager one last time before the band hops off stage for good? Admittedly, it almost sounds like a different band compared to their inevitable evolution, but this would surely be a rad nod to old school, time warped fans who long for the eye liner days of yore.

"Killing Fields" – Divine Intervention (1994)

The drum fill heard round the world. Although first introduced to the Slatanic Wehrmacht on 1993’s uber rad Ice-T collaboration “Disorder,” it was the opening notes of “Killing Fields” that truly brought Slayer’s [at the time] new skinsman, Paul Bostaph onto the world’s stage. Right out the gate, dude killed it. Bostaph would go on to carve out a nice chunk of Slayer history for himself, but everyone knows that "Killing Fields" will always be his moment. How gnarly would it be if they played this sucker live just one more time?
