Back In The Day - Amorphis

Posted by Frank Injection on March 27th, 2008

Back in 1994, Finland's Amorphis was the best new sound since distortion to this youngin. Even still I cant help but find my hand clenching into a claw as the song continues in the background. After abandoning their initial death metal approach shown in debut LP "The Karelian Isthmus", the band wasted no time exploring themselves further as song writers both musically and lyrically. "Black Winter Day" can be found on the 1994 release "Tales from the Thousand Lakes" a concept disc surrounding the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala. The EP for "Black Winter Day" would prove to be the launch pad for Amorphis' change in musical direction once again, this time donning a full time clean vocalist. Despite the bands many changes in sound, this video features Amorphis in what I believe is their finest era. I'd even nominate this epic single for a spot on Metal Sucks' Saturday Song To Get Stoned To… except my calendar is marked Saturday, everyday.

tr00 & False: Muse, Beards, Meshuggah and more

Posted by RobInjection on March 27th, 2008

It’s never too late to be tr00. Every week, the editors of MetalSucks.net, Axl Rosenberg and Vince Neilstein, will dissect the week’s stories and decide which stories are deemed worthy of the title “tr00″and admonish all posers who are false and upset the metal gods. Here are this week’s entries:

tr00:

Muse
Announce Live DVD/CD details for HAARP (filmed live at Wembley in June, 2007), release clips online, and announce special screenings in select cities.

Meshuggah
New album obZen debuts at #59 on the Soundscan charts, shifting over 11,000 units in its first week.

Killswitch Engage
Justin Foley reveals the secrets behind his beard and Adam D. exposes his nuts for the world to see, then shrugs it off.

False:

Through the Eyes of the Dead
Lost yet another guitarist after dropping off the Scum of the Earth Tour with Soilwork and Throwdown. It sucks to be these guys right now.

Velvet Revolver
Scott Weiland surprises his band by announcing on-stage that this will be the last Velvet Revolver tour. Matt Sorum and Slash both fire back through the press.

Guitar Hero
Has the backlash begun? Guitar Hero announced a portable version of the hit game for Nintendo DS, but we can't help but wonder if this trend is starting to fade.

CD Review: CAVALERA CONSPIRACY - Inflikted

Posted by Cosmo Lee on March 24th, 2008

cavaleraconspiracy infliktedCavalera Conspiracy is the musical reunion of brothers Max and Igor Cavalera after a decade-long estrangement.  Both have moved on from their origins in Sepultura; Max has Soulfly, which continues in the direction of Sepultura's Roots, while Igor has Mixhell, his DJ project.  Inflikted is billed as a return to their punk and metal roots, which is true in form but not substance.

In fact, Cavalera Conspiracy sounds like Soulfly's thrashier, heavier side, which arose after Soulfly added Marc Rizzo as a lead guitarist.  It also sounds like Nailbomb, Max's industrial thrash project with Fudge Tunnel's Alex Newport.  At times, Sepultura's pre-Chaos A.D. thrash comes through, like in the frantic "The Doom of All Fires."  There's really not much difference among these sides of Max; his four-stringed riffs are unmistakable.  They're solidly kinetic, but post-Sepultura, he's churned out so many that they blur together now.

As with Soulfly, the color comes from Rizzo.  He saved Soulfly from nu-metal oblivion, and while his backing here is more robust, his solos and melodies really make the songs.  "Nevertrust" would be standard hardcore punk if not for Rizzo's wildly zigzagging leads.  In "Ultra-Violent," he pours out death metal-esque dissonance, then rockets into a flurry of triplets that would make Kirk Hammett jealous.  Ironically, the plainness of Max's riffs allows Rizzo to take flight with abandon; he's the true star of this record.

Meanwhile, Igor is surprisingly invisible.  His drumming is technically perfect - the barrelling double bass in "Hex" recalls the glory days of Arise - but the sterile, high-tech production erases his personality.  "Dark Ark" dabbles in his trademark tribal percussion, and "Bloodbrawl" has colorful toms.  But otherwise, his sense of groove is gone; he sounds like any other click-tracked machine-gunner today.

Clean and hyper-compressed, Inflikted is the most upscale-sounding record of Max's career.  Rizzo's parts are practically mixed in surround sound; Max's vocals go through all kinds of electronic gadgetry.  His typically simplistic lyrics ("Never trust society / Never trust the system / Never trust the enemy / Never trust the politricks") would nevertheless have rung true in the gritty settings of Sepultura and Soulfly.  Here, he seems to have nothing to say other than, "We're back."

6.5/10

Video of the Day: I dare you not to like IWRESTLEDABEARONCE

Posted by RobInjection on March 24th, 2008

So, what's the deal with all these new bands that put the core in grindcore with their silly long names and infectious breakdowns? There may be a bit of an overflow of these types of bands, but I declare that Louisiana's IWRESTLEDABEARONCE are a band to reckon with. This band has a pinch of everything, grind, core, some jazz, clean vocals, and a female singer to boot! What I liked most about this band, is the balance of not taking themselves too seriously and then absolutely bringing it!

Quick Bits: GOD FORBID story about the white powder; More problems for THROUGH THE EYS OF THE DEAD; DEP update; new video from CRINN

Posted by RobInjection on March 24th, 2008

> Dallas Coyle, GOD FORBID guitarist, has been posting a weekly column at MetalSucks and it's been quite the read. The latest talks about his experience on Ozzfest 2004, their first mega tour and his first experience doing cocaine:

We go to the bus and go to the back lounge. I hand out some beers and look at this girl. She takes off her shirt and I’m like ‘What the fuck?’ My friend locks the door to the back lounge. This girl takes her bra off, pulls out a bag of cocaine and begins to spread it all over her tits! My friend does a line and I’m like, ‘What the fuck? What do I do?’ I remember my silent pact. This is about the most rock n roll thing that you can think of. I watch her put some more on her tits, which were beautiful. I kneeled down near her nipple and snorted my first line of cocaine ever. Then I licked the nipple. Crazy, right?

Seriously, if you were offered cocaine on a set of huge titties, how could you resist? Dallas also goes into how he had a bit of a problem with the yay, until he finally kicked it last New Years. All the columns have been really good and worth a read.

> It looks as if THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD may be on its last legs. One of the band's guitarists, Richard Turbeville has announced he is leaving the band this weekend to focus on his other band, FROM GRAVES OF VALOR. Lambgoat is also reporting that the band may have also lost the services of their drummer "Lech" although nothing official has been announced.

> THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN have posted an update on what they're up to on their Myspace page.

> The video for THE CRINN's "Tearing Through Synoptic Skies" has been posted online.

Fuck Yes! GOROD post video of new song demo from recording sessions

Posted by RobInjection on March 24th, 2008

France's GOROD, not to be confused with Randy Blythe's favorite new band GOJIRA, is definitely a band listened to often here at Metal Injection headquarters. Which is why the above clip previewing a track off of they untitled upcoming record got us all giddy inside. These dudes absolutely shred. We captured some pretty amazing live footage of the band at last year's Maryland Death Fest which we should be putting up (relatively) soon.

DARKANE reports from the Studio

Posted by Frank Injection on March 24th, 2008

Sweden's Darkane are doing what they do best, recording another auditory assault for us to anticipate.  The band has just released part 3 of their Studio Diary featuring over 8 minutes of insane drumming, and goofy antics, from skin man Peter Wildoer.

Back In The Day - Accept

Posted by Frank Injection on March 24th, 2008

Back in 1985, Germany's Accept was already well known amongst head bangers world wide. Their fifth studio release in 1983 "Balls To The Wall" had become something of a calling card, complete with gold certification in the United States. Despite the popularity of "Balls To The Wall", it was their next full length and single "Metal Heart" that would captivate me as a young fan. It was the first Accept LP to be recorded digitally along side Scorpians' own Dieter Dierks, and the last record made while the band still got along. The "Metal Heart" video was probably best known for borrowing 2 well known classical themes; Tchaikovsky's Slavonic March, and and Beethoven's Für Elise. I've still never heard Beethoven sound this shredtastic since Metal Heart's release.

Back In The Day - Stuck Mojo

Posted by Frank Injection on March 21st, 2008

Back in 1995, Stuck Mojo solidified the Rap Metal sub-genre with their debut on Century Media. Despite the rap-metal genre being one of the smallest of music classifications, it's hard to ignore all the rocking collaborations between the 2 worlds we've been listening to for years. Faith No More, Suicidial Tendencies, Public Enemy/Anthrax are a few examples of rap meets metal gone right, however I have to hand it to Stuck Mojo for being one of the heaviest of it's kind. "Not Promised Tomorrow" is a track off the band's 1995 release "Snappin' Necks."

Guitar Hero on Nintendo DS is just one step too far

Posted by RobInjection on March 20th, 2008

Its no secret that the we here at Metal Injection headquarters are all huge Guitar Hero fans. When the news came out that they were developing a version for the portable Nintendo DS, I was a bit intrigued. Now, IGN has revealed what the game would look like. At first, it seems kind of interesting, but then I watched the video of the commercial they are doing to shill the product:

Um, seriously? I know people say even playing a plastic guitar is ridiculous, but this..looks…FUCKING…ridiculous! The Guitar Hero marketing machine has officially jumped the shark.

Back In The Day - King Diamond

Posted by Frank Injection on March 20th, 2008

Back in 1987 listening to King Diamond was the fastest way to piss off your parents! Following the break up of Mercyful Fate, vocalist and primary song writer, King Diamond had formed a solo project that released a series of concept albums in the vein of Rock Operas. Known for his satanic imagery, stage shows and conceptual records, King Diamond (the band) has proven to out sell every other project the corpse painted vocalist had formed. "The Family Ghost" video is a selection off the 1987 release "Abigail", a story set in 1845 about an inherited mansion haunted by the spirits of it's bloody past. The video also features drummer power house Mickey Dee, whom has spent the last 16 years playing for the legendary Motorhead. Dee was asked several times by Lemmy to join Motorhead while playing for Diamond in the 80's, it took 7 years and an ego-fall out with Diamond to finally accept.
