Want to talk about weird? Let's talk about this video for California's ARSONISTS GET ALL THE GIRLS track "Shoeshine For Neptune". Sure, there is about a minute and a half before the song even starts, but once it does it leaves you going "What the fuck?" but for all the right reasons. In this post-Dillinger Escape Plan era of noise-makers its great to find a band with enough sense of humor about themselves, to shed new light on a genre of music that may be a bit over-exposed. This band is great, I definitely recommend checking them out, and once they come around New York, you can bet they will be on Metal Injection.

With all the success of Guitar Hero, its easy to see why video game makers would be interested in expanding the field of rock/metal related video games. Enter Brütal Legend. The game stars a metal roadie named will star metal roadie, Eddie Riggs voiced by Jack Black, on his tour of destruction through a mystical world of rock and roll legend. Riggs, armed with a battle axe, guitar and a V8 engine will battle ogres, demons and other assorted mytholigical creatures. His goal is to assemble an army of headbangers and attempt to save the day and get the girl. The game also has several big names donating their vocal talents to the cause. The likes if Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, and Ronnie James Dio will all lend voices to the game. The game is set for release sometime in 2008.

Only in the Internet age could bands so far away sound so alike. Compare All Shall Perish's (Bay Area) first album with Alienacja (Poland), Despised Icon (Montreal), and Whitechapel (Knoxville, TN), and you won't hear much difference. They're all textbook "deathcore," fusing death metal and hardcore punk. Death growls, pig squeal "brees," piledriver breakdowns, and occasional Gothenburg death metal are all de rigueur, as well as the ubiquitous Job for a Cowboy font. Did someone call a meeting and decide this was Hot Topic's priority for 2007?
It's not a good sign when a metal record's most unique moment comes from keyboards (the title track's epic outro). Otherwise, everything here came from somewhere else. The half-speed intro to "Devirgination Studies" is pure Dying Fetus. The Swedish melodies in "Fairy Fay" came from The Black Dahlia Murder (who took them from, uh, Sweden). Those midrange yells alternating with low death growls? Leo Miller from Animosity got there first. In fact, Whitechapel sound a lot like Animosity. Maybe when Metal Blade signed Whitechapel recently, they forgot they already had Animosity on their roster.
This is all unfortunate, as the execution here is excellent. On only their debut, Whitechapel demonstrate impressive instrumental proficiency. They shift gears smoothly, turning slowly-galloping riffs into crushing breakdowns, as in "Fairy Fay" and "Prostatic Fluid Asphyxiation." A brief bit of thrash even surfaces in the title track. This band knows what it's doing. Sadly, what it's doing is being other bands.
5.5/10

Atlanta, GA's DAATH have posted part 2 in their ongoing "Daathumentary" series (get it?). What do you learn from it? Their van keeps breaking down, but that won't stop them from having a good time, meeting up with some random chicks, jumping off some clips and smoking some ganj and editing weird videos for people to watch on YouTube. The metal dream is alive!

Downloadable Content

Mike Patton is weird, but the good kind of weird. So, why not hook up with a coool toy company (UNKL) and have them release a set of toys based on bands on your label Ipecac Records. Well, they are doing just that!
Pitchfork reports: Once a month next year, teeny boutique toymakers UNKL will issue a series of limited-edition figurines inspired by the Ipecac Recordings roster. Each figure will be available individually in a limited edition of 500, with a new one arriving each month. More info available at UNKL's offical site.

I don't know if you've heard, but apparently Guitar Hero III comes out tonight at midnight. And, it features Slash of Velvet Revolver and some other band as a boss. The above video shows some behind the scenes footage of Slash being motion-captured. Great to see that the makers of the game not only mo-cap his movements, but those of his signature top-hat as well. The game can't come out soon enough!

CARNIVORE has announced an exclusive, one-off New York-area show as a warm-up for its forthcoming European tour. The event takes place at L'Amour, in the club's recently opened new location in Staten Island, on Wednesday, November 21. Dubbed "The Thanksgiving Eve Massacre", the show will include additional performances by SEVENTH VOID (featuring Johnny Kelly and Kenny Hickey of TYPE O NEGATIVE) and the Staten Island-based SAINTS OF PAIN.
Carnivore is of course Peter Steele's politically incorrect band pre-TYPE O days. Heres a little morcel of Carnivore footage: Pete and the boys playing Jesus Hitler at last year's Wacken Open Air in Germany. Remember Germany from history class?

Well, sort of. Apparently, some wacky rock-n-roller thought it would be a great idea to gut a Stratocaster and fill it with pure Peruvian white gold. This dude was trying to get to Rome from Costa Rica when some narc happen to spot some residue coming out of the guitar. Good idea, poor execution. What have we learned? Don't go to Rome!

When it was announced that DETHKLOK would be playing a handful of dates to promote the DETHALBUM many fans were unsure just how they would pull it off. Well, a recent press release puts your worries to rest:
Dethklok's Gorillaz-style show will feature a set-long animated projection of the virtual band performing while the actual live band (including legendary metal drummer Gene Hoglan of Death, Dark Angel, and Strapping Young Lad as well as Metalocalypse creator Brendon Small) playing behind.
I don't care what you say, that sounds awesome! The album is great and this is a great idea. Oh, and you know what else was great? Our interview with DETHKLOK. Full tour dates after the jump… (more…)

W.A.S.P. has posted the following message on its official web site:
"Dear fans, please DO NOT bring any cameras into the shows this fall as it is strictly prohibited to take pictures or recordings of the performance of W.A.S.P.! Security personnel at every venue will confiscate any cameras (including digital cameras and mobile phones with ability to record) from you before entering the venues. Please respect this request and enjoy the evening with 'The Crimson Idol'.
Hey Crimson Idol, I don't know where you've been the last 15 years, but camera phones are pretty common nowadays. Looks like half the people who were going to go to your show are canceling and the other 10 can't afford cellphones anyway.

The band may have postponed their tour because guitarist Ben Weinman got a little too crazy at their video shoot a few weeks back, but DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN aren't just going to sit back and let you forget about them. They have been all over the net promoting their upcoming release Ire Works (out November 13th), including posting the above rehearsal footage of one of their new songs, Nong Eye Gong.
In addition, the band has put a bunch of songs on their Myspace page, and a new song entitled “Milk Lizard” online here.
Also, the band will celebrate the release of their highly anticipated new album, Ire Works, on November 13th at Europa in Brooklyn, NY. The show will be $6 and feature performances by CAR BOMB, DYSRHYTHMIA, and GIANT (note: DEP isn’t expected to perform).

Our homies at MetalSucks and HORSE THE BAND keyboardist Erik Engstrom, aka Lord Gold, have teamed up for exclusive tour blogs from the road on HORSE THE BAND's current tour. This week, Erik shares his thoughts on what it means to be metal. An excerpt from the diary follows:
"One time I met this guy. He was the drummer for a popular death metal band. Before a show, you might think a death metal band would be trying to drink every beer backstage, setting up a recording device in the girls' bathroom, and stealing bottles of obscure liquor from the bar. But you are wrong. What really was happening was the normal brutal band routine. The drummer was warming up with rudiments on his drum pad in the back room for four hours. The two guitarists were on their Macbooks playing Internet Boggle, their singer was pacing around doing vocal exercises in the middle of everyone, and their bassist was taking a nap after doing a photo shoot with PETA."
