New England Metalfest Stream of (Almost Un-)Consciousness

Posted by RobInjection on April 27th, 2007

New England Metal and Hardcore Festival

New England Weather

10:05 - Who the hell wakes up at 8AM to go to a metal show? Metal Injection, that's who! We made it to Massachusetts, and waking this morning to the shittiest weather ever! We stayed a little further from the fest this first night, and let me say the Super 8 has treated us well. They even have complimentary Continental Breakfast, with a full-on waffle maker that I totally managed to fuck up. Take that Super 8! Anyway, we're headed to the fest now. Check in at our next hotel is around 4, so we might not have any more updates until then.

4:30 - So we just checked in to our new hotel a block away from the venue. Woohooo…paaaarrrrttttaaayyy!! Luckily the weather has become a little better. The fest is pretty packed. Early favorite who blew us away has to be Skeleton Witch. They completely killed it this afternoon. We saw our buddy Alex E. from DESPISED ICON and he was telling us about how hard it was for them to get there. Their drummer got hit by a car last night, they had trouble at the border AND there was a leak in their trailer….and they still made it to the fest to rock the fuck out of it! They're actually right about to go on. Everybody is still settling in. More updates later!

Photo 16

5:30 - DESPISED ICON absolutely killed it this evening. We just interviewed members of 3 INCHES OF BLOOD as well as the vocalist of BENEATH THE MASSACRE. Very cool dudes. 3 Inches of Blood are from Vancouver. Beneath the Massacre are from Montreal. That's pretty much all I learned from those interviews…..Deep!

7:00 - So, we're basically getting metal room service. We've just been hanging out in our room and every 15 or 20 minutes a band has come by to do an interview. Our latest guest was the ultra-br00tal Nergal from BEHEMOTH. We've had him on the show before and he's always been completely awesome to hang out with. I was just laying in bed ::knock knock:: Oh, it's Nergal…gotta get up. Nergal was awesome, by the way. Some interview highlights included how they're honored to be on Ozzfest, and that there will be absolutely no mid-tempo songs played…the first song will be crushing…the last song will be crushing…and everything in the middle will be crushing. Watch out Middle America! Once the topic of groupies came up, Nergal was quick to mention, that the best ones are in South America and Russia.

WASTED
8:11 On my way to being wasted

9:00 - The original singer of Bury Your Dead, Mat Bruso, re-joined the band for a number, in a pretty cool moment.

9:15 - We attend "Woosta Pizza" for all our dining needs. They tell us the place it closed, so we ordered and ate it outside their door. LAME! It was pretty shitty pizza too.

behemothbehemothNERGALbehemothbehemoth

9:45 - BEHEMOTHHHH!!!!!!!!1111!!11!!!!!! Absolutely fucking destroyed it this evening. We managed to get right in front of the barricade area to watch them. The speakers were literally moving me. An excerpt of Nergal's stage ramblings:

We came to this country for three things. Number one…your women. Number two…your alcohol, and number three…TO CONQUER ALL… [cue the song]

And of course the crowd explodes. They played a new song off their forthcoming album, and (no surprise) it was brutal as fuck!! At one point during the set, I ran into Howard Jones of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and he mentioned to me how he constantly gets mention of the interview he did on Metal Injection. We laugh about how he totally caught me off guard, and out-dicked me! Good times.

10:30 - Backstage, I begin discussing the intricacies of pot brownies with Sean, the singer of DAATH. He mentions how he's not an avid pot-smoker, but he enjoys baking, especially pot brownies, and gave us a splendid recipe. We headed back here to the hotel to do this update, and re-liquor up for DIMMU BORGIR.

Saturday - 3:30 - Sorry, there have been no updates today. It's been really hectic this afternoon. We did manage to shoot a Guitar Hero Elimination Tournament with members of CANNIBAL CORPSE, UNEARTH, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER and THE RED CHORD. We got a fully day of Metal Blade-ness happening today.

Rest of the Day: PSYOPUS absolutely pwned the second stage. There were many-a-claws. The band had a new frontman, Harrison from Jefferson Planecrash, who definitely managed to brings it, and is a suitable replacement for their old vocalist, Adam. In addition, THE RED CHORD, JOB FOR A COWBOY and BLACK DAHLIA MURDER all destroyed the main stage. All three bands debuted some new material, and it was just as brutal as their older material. This summer is looking to be an awesome one for new music. After UNEARTH wrapped up their set, it was time for the special Metal Blade jam. Honestly, it was kind of disappointing. It was one of those things where it was more fun for the bands playing than it was for the audience. The special guests were…wait for it…AS I LAY DYING. Wow, right? The jam bands stormed through METALLICA's "Hit The Lights", as well as some classics from SLAYER (pre-Reign in Blood era) and even pulled out a DIAMONDHEAD tune.

CD Review: Behemoth - Chaotica - The Essence of the Underworld

Posted by Cosmo Lee on April 25th, 2007

behemoth chaoticaBefore Behemoth became a death metal juggernaut, it played black metal. Of course, its death metal is often called "blackened," and the Polish band still plays live in corpsepaint, albeit sparingly. However, those used to its recent 7-string crunchings will be shocked to hear its early sounds - primitive, lo-fi, with high shrieks far removed from the monstrous, processed death growls of Demigod.

Behemoth's pre-1999 discography is quite rich. However, what was once rare and scattered has been reissued repeatedly, flooding the market with similarly-named packages. Here's the lowdown on these compilations:

    1. Chaotica - The Essence of the Underworld - Metal Mind recently re-released this two-disc set from 1999 (Season of Mist seems to have also reissued it in 2003). It contains And the Forests Dream Eternally (EP, 1994), Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic) (full-length, 1995), Grom (full-length, 1996), Bewitching the Pomerania (EP, 1997), and four previously unreleased covers and demo tracks.

    2. Historica - released in 2003, the Historica box set is the same thing as Chaotica, but spreads its contents across five discs, adding Pandemonic Incantations (full-length, 1998), and a disc of live recordings and rarities. This is the most complete collection of Behemoth's black metal era.

    3. Demonica - released in 2006, this two-disc set collects previously unreleased tracks mostly from Behemoth's black metal era, and does not overlap with Chaotica or Historica.

For whatever reason, Chaotica and Historica do not appear on the discography on Behemoth's website, and are thus "considered either bootleg or pirate." However, Nergal himself writes the liner notes to Chaotica, so the official status of this compilation is indefinite.

However, what's definite is its quality. Disc 1 is more of a curio than anything. Garbage can production! Witchy shrieks! Guitars that sound like bumblebees! It's quite listenable, though, as Nergal has frankly been a visionary since day one, giving the songs strong, if undistinguished shapes.

Chaotica comes alive on Disc 2, as Grom leaps out of the speakers with remastered oomph; Nergal's personality is better suited for large sound rather than lo-fi grit. The songs are fierce but varied, working in keyboards, acoustic guitars, clean tones, and startlingly effective female vocals. Behemoth here still sounds completely different from its present incarnation (that transition wouldn't take place until 1999's Satanica, its first foray into death metal), but the same focus and intensity are present.

Though Chaotica and Historica are obvious cash cows, they're worth exploring. My money is on Historica, as it has a lavish, photo-filled booklet, and Pandemonic Incantations is the first appearance of present-day drummer Inferno. However, it's pricey and can be hard to find, so Chaotica is a fine cut-rate option. Regardless of which compilation you choose, you'll gain insight into why Behemoth wears that funny white paint onstage.

SUICIDAL in particular played one of the first GWAR shows ever. Tonight I shall burn a baby upon the Altar of Eternal Syphillis."

After this he grew to five times his normal size and farted himself into near-orbit.

The original members of SPINAL TAP will be there: guitarist Nigel Tufnel (played by Christopher Guest), singer David St Hubbins (Michael McKean) and bassist Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). Rob Reiner, who both directed "This is Spinal Tap" and played the fake documentarian Marty DeBergi in the film, will also be in attendance.

A new 15-minute film directed by Reiner on the band's reunion will also play at the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York tonight.

Les Claypool putting out a 'Fancy' DVD

Posted by RobInjection on April 25th, 2007

Les Claypool

On May 29, renowned bassist and legendary PRIMUS frontman Les Claypool will release "Fancy" (Prawn Song), his first solo live concert DVD from his 2006 summer tour with his latest group of accomplished players. A major market tour commences May 23 in Minneapolis and wraps July 14 at the All Good Music Festival in Masontown, WV. Claypool will also perform at the Wakarusa and High Sierra festivals.

"Fancy" shows the latest band at its peak performance. With longtime associates Skerik on sax and Mike Dillon on vibes, marimba and percussion (both of GARAGE A TROIS and CRITTERS' BUGGIN'), the band is rounded out by CAKE drummer Paolo Baldi and multi-instrumentalist Gabby La La. The 2006 tour was in support of Claypool's then-current CD release "Of Whales and Woe", and thus material from this album is favored here. Other songs are drawn from 2002's "Purple Onion" and the 1996 Interscope release "Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel: Highball With the Devil".

In other exciting news, National Lampoon has announced its first feature film acquisition, "Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo", the directorial debut of Les Claypool. "Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo" a comedy that takes an endearing yet twisted look at the American cultural phenomenon known as the "jam band" scene. Claypool compares the film's comedic style less to "Spinal Tap" and more to Ricky Gervais's seminal BBC comedy "The Office". Look soon for the theatrical release of the "mockumentary" which follows four head-strong musicians and their desire to make a big splash.

Long acknowledged as one of rock's leading bassists, Les Claypool began branching out from the alt-rock sound of PRIMUS in 2000, starting COLONEL CLAYPOOL'S FEARLESS FLYING FROG BRIGADE, courting the jam band audience. Selling over 500,000 CDs since then under a few different band names including OYSTERHEAD (with THE POLICE's Stewart Copeland and Trey Anastasio of PHISH), Les put out the career-spanning DVD "5 Gallons of Diesel" in 2005. This disc captured the complete myriad of band projects Les has worked with outside of PRIMUS.

EVERY TIME I DIE set to release "The Big Dirty"

Posted by RobInjection on April 24th, 2007

Every Time I Die

EVERY TIME I DIE has issued the following statement in regards to their upcoming album, "The Big Dirty":

Unless you're a sorority girl, you're probably not accustomed to dudes telling you that something called "the big dirty" is about to invade your personal space. Well we here at Every Time I Die are doing just that, so open your holes wide. Your EAR holes. This August, Ferret Music will release what can only be described as "Every Time I Die's newest album" known as "The Big Dirty". Chock-a-block with riffs that only 4 months of a Buffalo, New York winter could spawn, this new record will undoubtedly satisfy those that have followed the band since their first full length release "Last Night In Town" all the way through "Gutter Phenomenon". And if you were one of the 38 confused men who strayed somewhere along that interim, we welcome you back with open arms. You want ironically distasteful rock and roll pretenses? You got em. You want riffs so filthy they should have a moustache and wear elastic work out pants when they go out to eat at the Olive Garden? Right here, boys. You want mosh parts so brutal it could star opposite Charles Bronson in ANY of the Death Wish movies? Come get some. Produced by Steve Evetts, The Big Dirty is the CD you would compile if asked to make a mix of the BEST Every Time I Die songs you haven't heard yet. Ten plus tracks that tore from our filthy hands like the creature that jumped out of that dudes stomach in Alien. If this ain't your favorite heavy release of the year, I'll eat my damn hat. Look for us on Sounds Of The Underground this summer with Chimaira and GWAR. And if you're in Australia, firstly "G'day Mate!" and secondly get your ass ready for us and Norma Jean in early June. Who's buyin?
