CD Review: Dokken - From Conception: Live 1981

Posted by Cosmo Lee on March 30th, 2007

dokken fromconceptionlive1981Dokken's 1979 demo, Back in the Streets (available for free download here), is worth hearing, as it's quite unlike what the name Dokken typically evokes. It's a short set of fairly raw glam rock that's bouncy and decidedly '70s. Dokken's first album, 1983's Breaking the Chains, was almost completely different - slick, polished, very '80s LA. From Conception: Live 1981, culled from long-forgotten West Coast dates, captures Dokken's sound in between.

The band has had a number of live albums (Beast from the East, One Live Night, Live from the Sun). This one, though, is interesting because the band hadn't "lost its innocence" yet. Dokken hadn't yet signed to a US label, and multiplatinum success was years away.

Thus, the sound is an intriguing combination of raw glam rock and slick hair metal. Although 60% of Breaking the Chains is on here (as well as three previously unreleased songs and a guitar solo by George Lynch), the band has a hungry edge lacking on its later, more mature live recordings.

Even though Don Dokken was one of the best singers in hair metal, and Lynch was one of its most technically accomplished guitarists, Dokken didn't have the personality that peers like Ratt and Poison had. Its songs were too perfect, and their execution was too clean.

However, these complaints vanish here, as this disc captures an energetic club date in great, natural sound. Lynch's tone is ripping, although his unaccompanied solo is a boring mishmash of two-handed tapping and whammy bar divebombs; he's every bit the technical equal of Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads, but without the soul.

The real stars here are the songs, which are maddeningly catchy. "Paris is Burning" kicks things off strongly, "Live to Rock (Rock to Live)" lives up to its name, and "Young Girls" is about, well, young girls. "Nightrider" becomes an eight-minute jam due to a rather silly call-and-response section that shows off Dokken's powerful voice. No live disc would be complete without inane stage banter, and this one has it in spades - lots of "I can't hear you!" and such. At one point, Dokken congratulates the crowd on making some noise: "That's the LA attitude!" Ah, those were the days.

For those who see Dokken as mere corporate rock or an ironic T-shirt, this disc should be a pleasant surprise. In a way, it lives up to the promise of hair metal more than the era's studio albums ever did: hot, sweaty rock 'n' roll.

CD Review: Hacride - Amoeba

Posted by Cosmo Lee on March 27th, 2007

hacride amoebaWhat Gojira was last year, Hacride is this year - a French metallic missile that should detonate devastatingly across the Atlantic. Put away those freedom fries and call FEMA. On second thought, don't - they've got their own French Quarter to deal with. It's been no quarter from the French this past year, with Merrimack, Antaeus, Blut Aus Nord, and Spektr tearing it up black metal-wise, and Gorod, Gojira, Yyrkoon, and Phazm delivering quality death metal.

Hacride has now vaulted to the top of that list. Its debut, Deviant Current Signal, was solid; few, though, could have foreseen the tremendous progression on Amoeba. Quite simply, it's metal for the mind, body, and soul.

The band shares common aspects with Gojira, splaying abstract, widescreen chords across the crushing, twisting rhythms of Strapping Young Lad and Meshuggah. Under this skin of liquid metal, electronics pulse and glow. The result is the most futuristic sound in metal since Fear Factory's Demanufacture.

What sets Hacride apart are the ghosts in its machine. Acoustic guitars add human textures to its chugging riffs; picture not a campfire singalong, but amber waves of grain as giant mecha robots march by. "Deprived of Soul" hits heart-pounding climaxes, thanks to wrenching clean singing. Not only does the song mine the past with Death-approved harmonies, it kicks them into the future with furious, thundering riffs. "Fate" also opens with acoustic guitar, but drops into skull-caving wrecking balls of riffing, with well-timed squeaks that feel like rakes across the face. "Liquid" offers a respite from the madness, with lush, clean-toned tapping a la Joe Satriani.

The hands-down highlight is "Zambra," a collaboration with the Spanish flamenco group Ojos de Brujo. It sounds crazy, but it absolutely works. Seductive female vocals and spicy acoustic strumming lead to a syncopated, percussive throwdown that recalls Sepultura's "Ratamahatta." Different countries and different tribes, of course - but the pulse is the same. This is metal for the future, smashing sonic, genre, and national boundaries.

So, after a little YouTube searching, I found this awesome clip. That's right, the wall of noise you hear is being performed by a bassist and a drummer. Take that, Polyphonic Spree!

SLAYER and MARILYN MANSON team up for co-headlining summer tour

Posted by RobInjection on March 27th, 2007

slayermanson

In a tour that will make your grandmother and local priest piss their pants, representatives for both SLAYER and MARILYN MANSON have announced that the two will join together for the unholiest of summer tours. Plans are for the tour to play some twenty-five cities and wrap up early September on the West Coast. A full, confirmed schedule will be announced shortly.

SLAYER and MARILYN MANSON will each play full sets, and two support bands, yet to be determined, will open all shows.

Just prior to the American trek, both MANSON and SLAYER will be on tour throughout Europe, sharing the stage at three European festivals - the U.K.’s Download Festival at Donington (June 9th), Greenfield Festival in Sweden (June 15th), and Stockholm’s Metaltown Festival (June 30th).

MARILYN MANSON just wrapped up work on his upcoming June release to be titled, “Eat Me, Drink Me,” which Rolling Stone magazine anticipates as “epic.” Voted “Best Band in the World” by Kerrang! magazine, the army of noise behind MARILYN MANSON’s bitterness is at once raw and massive when witnessing him live - “rousing the crowd with focuses ardor,” states the New York Times.

Celebrating their 26th year together, the always-uncompromising SLAYER was just named “Best Live Band” in SPIN’s 2006 Readers Poll, and picked up their first Grammy Award last month for “Best Metal Performance.” Their latest album, “Christ Illusion” - debuting at #5 on Billboard’s Albums Chart - takes on the U.S. Government about the War in Iraq, prompting one newspaper to speculate, “If Thomas Jefferson were alive today, he undoubtedly would be listening to SLAYER.”

Interview: DYING FETUS

Posted by Cosmo Lee on March 26th, 2007

dyingfetus band top 1 2
The Fetus is back - faster than ever, and still fierce as hell.  Despite an endlessly revolving door of personnel, the Maryland band has been undeniably influential.  Purification through Violence and Destroy the Opposition are stone-cold classics, with the latter providing Metal Injection's bone-crunching theme song.  With no Dying Fetus, there would be no deathcore.  Any new band that cites technical death metal, grindcore, and hardcore punk as influences owes DF in royalties based on pick squeals alone.  Guitarist Mike Kimball answered questions about Dying Fetus' new album, War of Attrition

What's behind the title and artwork of War of Attrition?

The main idea has to do with being bombarded by the various forms of the media, which are usually trying to sell us somethindyingfetus warofattrition 1 2 3 4g or influence our point of view. The cover images show the patriotic and military aspect of this idea, so obviously there are some conflicting ideas inherent in that - basically, a sense of ambivalence. The cover art was done by Orion [Landau] at Relapse, and we had some concern that people might misinterpret these images, but ultimately we decided this is always a risk, and it shouldn't make us compromise anything.

What's going on lyrically with this record? Anything special or different from before?

A lot of people have noticed less of an emphasis on political lyrics since I joined. I feel the lyrics on this album follow the music - both are more aggressive than the last record. It offers some dark images on subjects like war, the legal system, excess consumerism, and so forth. These are the ideas I like to write about, and the rest of the band seems to enjoy it as well.

Dying Fetus has had a number of logos over time. Do these represent changes in the band's approach?

I think there are just two logos - one old-style logo and one logo in block lettering. For a while we were using both, and we still often incorporate both logos into our T-shirt designs. I suppose the two logos could suggest the two main musical elements we try to balance, namely, the fast technical sections and the slower groove breakdowns, but, really, we didn't approach them with that in mind.

War of Attrition sounds a lot better than Stop at Nothing. What did you do differently production-wise?

dyingfetus mikekimball 1 2A lot of improvements had happened with the recording equipment, which gave us more time to focus on our performances and the sound of each instrument.  We also used a different guitar tone - Stop at Nothing was a bit of a departure in this area. On both albums, we used my guitar rig, and for this one I have recently bought the same guitar head John has always used, the old Ampeg VH140C, plus I also use Marshall 1960 cabinets instead of the Randalls. I think this was a big reason this album sounded so much better than the last. We specifically wanted the album to sound closer to our classic albums, although we wanted a more aggressive tone.

Before recording this album, you put out a call for drummer auditions via video submissions. What was the response like?

Ha ha, personally I thought there would be a stronger response. We even heard later from some drummers who had considered auditioning but were too intimidated. As someone who has also had to experience this, I must say you never know if you don't try.  If you give it a shot, then you have a chance, but if you don't give it a shot, you can be sure that nothing will happen. Duane is a very good drummer and he's also the only drummer who really nailed every aspect of auditioning - from sending us a video of himself playing our songs to flying out and jamming with us, and generally showing a sense of commitment to the band.

Playing with Duane Timlin vs. Erik Sayenga - compare and contrast.

dyingfetus duanetimlinI think there may be small differences in the kinds of parts where they are more comfortable or seem more polished but overall it is a very similar experience to play in a band with either of them.

Dying Fetus goes through members like J Lo goes through husbands. Why?

It isn't easy to maintain a consistent lineup in a metal band. We tour extensively, but we all still have to maintain day jobs when we are home, so balancing the needs of these two can make things very difficult. Also it can sometimes be due to musical or personal differences. In this aspect, lineup changes can be like earthquakes - you endure the tensions until it becomes too much and there is a slip, and then things tend to get shaken up.

What do Dying Fetus do for day jobs?

I do web development for TIG Global in Washington DC. Sean does construction, and John also does a type of construction or installation. I'm not sure what job Duane does at home, since he still lives in Texas, and I believe he has a side band or two. Our day jobs have changed somewhat over the years.

Evidently, you have some un-metallic musical tastes.  What would surprise your fans the most?

Everyone has been asking about this recently - in particular, John's supposed interest in rap over metal.  To be honest, we spent a lot of time in the tour van listening to 80's rock and metal. Some of it is because we actually like the music and some is just for the nostalgia or humor of it. I can't ever remember rap getting any play with us, actually.  I also enjoy other kinds of 80's music, mostly songs from the GTA: Vice City soundtrack. I listen to some classical and flamenco as well, both of which have some of the same fury that we enjoy [in] playing death metal.

You recently toured with Cannibal Corpse and Necrophagist. How did that go?

The tour went very, very well - we all got along great and apparently some of the shows [had] the highest attendance Cannibal had ever had in those cities. For me, the most memorable nights happened in places like Milwaukee, Hollywood, or Orlando - I hear that the House of Blues was sold out on a Monday night in Hollywood, and it is always kind of amazing to be playing a death metal show at the House of Blues at Disney World.

Any last words?

Thank you so much for the undying support and all the loyalty over the years! We hope you will enjoy our new album and come to see us next time we play near you!

Barbara Boxer Bitchslaps Blowhard

Posted by 3D on March 25th, 2007

James Inhofe, the senior Senator from Oklahoma, is a backwards, ultra-religious anti-science dummy who has made a speech in public, complete with photo presentation, declaring that there are not any gays in his family. He also often bases his political decisions on freaking Bible scripture.

No. 7, I believe very strongly that we ought to support Israel; that it has a right to the land. This is the most important reason: Because God said so. As I said a minute ago, look it up in the book of Genesis. It is right up there on the desk.

In Genesis 13:14-17, the Bible says:

The Lord said to Abram, "Lift up now your eyes, and look from the place where you are northward, and southward, and eastward and westward: for all the land which you see, to you will I give it, and to your seed forever. ….. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it to thee."

That is God talking.

The Bible says that Abram removed his tent and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar before the Lord. Hebron is in the West Bank. It is at this place where God appeared to Abram and said, "I am giving you this land," the West Bank.

One of his pet issues is the denial of global warming, and he had the floor when Al Gore appeared to testify… but wouldn't shut the fuck up and let Gore answer questions. Barbara Boxer and her gavel put him in his place.
