CD Review: The Handshake Murders - Usurper

Posted by Cosmo Lee on February 28th, 2007

thehandshakemurders usurperIt's not a good sign when all a band does is remind you of other bands. That's the musical equivalent of sleeping with someone while thinking of someone else the whole time. It can be a good, even great, experience, but it ain't the real thing. That's the case with Arkansas' The Handshake Murders, who are 80% Meshuggah and 20% Botch/Coalesce. A Life Once Lost and Norma Jean are fine bands - and we don't need more of them.

From the first notes, Meshuggah should be consulting its copyright lawyers. All its trademarks are here - dry, cutting guitars, with a ride cymbal keeping watch over grinding, odd-metered riffs. "Dissector" and "Myopia" brazenly unleash atonal, typed-out solos straight out of Fredrik Thordendal's playbook. When the band isn't aping Meshuggah, it's lifting the angular dissonance of Botch and Coalesce (see "Bloodline"). However, these bands would never devolve to a simplistic refrain of "I'll rip your throat out," as "Painted Contortionist" does. Otherwise, there's not an original note here.

That's a shame, as this material is perfectly executed. The band is tight, the songs are concise, and the sound is phenomenal. Eric Rachel of Trax East has recorded some great-sounding albums, but this is some of his best work. The instruments sound natural, and the mix is crisp and hard-hitting. It's disappointing that a band so technically talented can't find inspiration in itself. However, if you just can't wait until Meshuggah's next album, pick up this one.

CD Review: Laethora - March of the Parasite

Posted by Cosmo Lee on February 27th, 2007

laethora marchoftheparasiteAt the moment, the main selling point for Laethora is that its lineup includes guitarist Niklas Sundin of Dark Tranquillity. A skilled graphic designer with many famous album covers to his credit, he also did the artwork for Laethora's debut, March of the Parasite. However, the band (which includes three members of The Provenance) is hardly Sundin's show, as it sounds completely different from Dark Tranquillity. This album proves that Laethora more than stands on its own.

The press for Laethora somewhat misleadingly states that it's "rooted in the death/grind tradition," with "harsh and organic production." There's plenty of death metal here, but no grindcore whatsoever. The production isn't slick, but it's extremely professional, layered, and strong. What we essentially have here is a doom metal band in death metal armor.

March of the Parasite begins with a quote from film director Werner Herzog: "I believe the common denominator of the universe is not harmony, but chaos, hostility, and murder." No printed lyrics came with with the cardboard-sleeved promo, so I can't tell if this soundbite relates to the lyrics. However, its cheery sentiment applies to the sound. In its never-ending quest for brutality, death metal sometimes forgets how to be dark. A well-timed bend or discordant note can sound more evil than technical riffs flying by at 250 bpm.

Laethora has learned this lesson well, as March has a unique darkness about it. The album starts off solidly, though unspectacularly, with the Morbid Angel-esque "Parasite." "Clothing for the Dead," too, just seems to pass by. However, the album wakes up with "Revolution at Hand." Its blastbeats and eerie tremolo picking recall Napalm Death circa Fear, Emptiness, Despair.

From that point on, the album stops trying to be brutal (though it hits plenty hard) and instead wallows in its own darkness. Songs trudge through dirge-like half-speed sections, full of plangent ringing tones and piquant pick squeals. "Black Void Remembrance" is the highlight here. With devastatingly bleak riffs and haunting clean vocals, half the song could have been on Katatonia's Viva Emptiness. The other half is straight-up death metal with blastbeats and death growls. "Repulsive," too, alternates rocket-fueled thrash beats with a harmonics-tinged, steel-toed stomp straight out of Godflesh. Such duality sums up Laethora.

Those used to pumping their fists to Dark Tranquillity or headbanging to conventional death metal might find Laethora unsettling. Much metal makes the listener feel strong; this album doesn't. It's vulnerable, disturbed, and slightly panicked - the sound of shredders facing their inner demons.

7.5/10

Emo = Extreme? This news report says YES!

Posted by RobInjection on February 27th, 2007

Oh, news reporters. They're hip, they're with it….they know what emo is about and it's dangerous. People cut themselves for what is believed to be called "scene points"…PARENTS BEWARE. Seriously, folks…this report alone shows how our news channels CANNOT BE TRUSTED. When they turn mindless Myspace surveys into investigative reporting, there is a problem. Wait until they find out about MAYHEM.

SEEMLESS Frontman Jesse Leach "If you are a Musician…I am calling you out…RISE UP & MAKE A DIFFERNCE!"

Posted by deadspout on February 27th, 2007

SEEMLESS
Frontman Jesse David Leach posted online a very heart felt and inspirational "challenge" to his fellow musicians today on an official SEEMLESS Myspace bulletin. Leach who is more known for his stint in KILLSWITCH ENGAGE with his passionate and compassionate inspirational lyrics. Here is what he said:

How do we live in this world with so many Wars, human suffering & social injustice & not react. How is it in the US we are facing a war where we have our own country men comming home in body bags everyday, Nevermind all of the wars & human suffering the world over that we are not even aware of.

Our earth is being suffocated & exploited by multinational corporations, our air & water are becoming more & more filled with pollution. The food we eat is "modified" to keep costs low & raise profit in turn causing cancer & disease! Our Rainforests& trees, the core of all clean air on this earth is being decimated. The amount of cars that continue to pollute (including myself & you of course) with no strong movement to convert to eco-friendly energy. This world is so overpowered by greed & lust for the almighty dollar, people almost never stop to consider the consequense…do you?

As a person who lives for music I really watch the "mainstream" music ,because as an underground artist it really inspires a strong reaction in me. When I see videos & "singles" that are just mindless ramblings & shallow nothings, it really starts to grate & turn my stomatch. Enough mindless stuff enough METAL that all has the same kick drum sound & carbon copies of songs that sound the same or songs about some girl with breast implants & fast cars. Or "Fake pop Hip hop" about spending money (money that more than 3/4 of the listeners can never afford or ever dream of having in there possesion) or fat rims on your car or you bling or iced out grill & objectifying women once again (why is there so much disrespecting women in music!). This stuff is dumbing down our youth & creating a false reality for them or you to strive for…along with everything else we are spoonfed by the media.

Where are the protest songs, where is the outcry. Granted there are some but so few! I really feel there is a very large portion of our youth that is either indifferent or just so out of touch it that it just astounds me on a daily basis. If we would just seperate ourselves form all of our daily routine distractions: TV, Games,Cellphones, & yes the computer. Imagine how much more you would discover in life, how musch more aware of the air you breathe & how this world speaks to you & 9 times out of ten it falls on def ears

IF YOU ARE A MUSICIAN OR AN M.C. or WHATEVER

I AM CALLING YOU OUT RIGHT NOW!

…….RISE……RISE UP & MAKE A DIFFERNCE!…USE YOUR

VOICE!….HELP CREATE CHANGE!…..USE YOUR VOICE!!!!

The future of this world & the future of our children depend on you. MUSIC is one of the strongest tools in the world it is universal….
People are listening to you when you pick up a mic…so what are you saying & what are your videos saying??!!! STOP FILLING THE AIR with NONSENCE & selfish rantings about things that matter little in the grand scheme of things…………………..

Just some thoughts I wanted to share with who ever cares & is listening….sometimes you just have to vent

from your fellow Musician, Revolutionary, Rebel & friend…

God be with you & ONE Love!

ALL SHALL PERISH European Tour Update

Posted by deadspout on February 27th, 2007

ALL SHALL PERISH
have posted an update about their European tour on their official Myspace page:

Oi! Right then, well we have just been havin a blast in the uk. London bloody london 1000 blokes fuckin sold out insanity, but even crazier french-fries are chips, chips are crips and thers no such thing as fries! and arguably worse…kfc has gravy but no mash potatos!!!; fucking mid-evil times isn't it?

All in all tho it aint that different, we were eatin some indian food and we got offered to buy bootleg dvd's oakland style so we picked up this new euro movie hot fuzz, its the doods from shaun of the dead and its hillarious…..but the whole purchase made us feel quite at home.

We are constantly talking in british accents and I think we have managed to piss most of the country off but hey…they can fuck right off ay?
Bangers n mash aside these blokes know how to treat us yanks. Tonight was manchester, home of morrisey and the 2 cocks in the ass queen of porn alisha rhoads and needless to say the kids fuckin went crazy. Another 1000 sold out show and we all got to watch bleeding through rock a full house which if you have never seen….well u should consider it. (At this point I feel the need to explain the inside joke I just made. You see, when I was young and I saw bleeding through at gilman in berkely brandan the singer of bleeding through was dedicating a song to straight edge and talked for a while and then said "oh um ya…and if you arnt straight edge…um….you should consider it' which was said so casualy it made me and my friend rob chuckle. So there is my unessisary explaination of a inside joke just to clue you all in……you better feel special)

So ya bleeding through are fucking rad people, they are prolly the nicest band we have ever toured with and they have the smallest ego's for a band their size I've ever met. We have also fell in love with Jonas their tour manager and jared their drum tech (doods from hope conspirisy)

So enough for now….we will be in mainland europe in 5 days…and I hear its a lot different!

VITAL REMAINS reveal br00tal cover art for new release

Posted by RobInjection on February 26th, 2007

vitalremains

The cover artwork for the new VITAL REMAINS album, "Icons of Evil", has been posted online at this location. Due on April 3, "Icons of Evil" was produced by the renowned Erik Rutan (CANNIBAL CORPSE, GOATWHORE). This offering marks the group's second recording with Glen Benton (DEICIDE) on vocals. Founder Tony Lazaro (guitars) wrote the entire album and handled bass duties for its recording, while Dave Suzuki once again tracked all the drums and lead guitar parts.

"Icons of Evil" track listing

01. Where Is Your God Now
02. Icons of Evil
03. Scorned
04. Born To Rape The World
05. Reborn…The Upheaval of Nihility
06. Hammer Down The Nails
07. Shrapnel Embedded Flesh
08. 'Til Death
09. In Infamy
10. Disciples of Hell

Lazaro further describes the new effort: "A big thanks to Erik Rutan, who really worked us to near death in order to get us to deliver our best performances, which we think we did, without a doubt! We thought 'Dechristianize' was a tough album to record, but this effort proved us wrong. This album, hands down, sets the bar for death metal. We think our fans will soon agree without question that this is our 'Reign In Blood'."

Drawing from classic '80s metal bands such as VENOM, BATHORY, MERCYFUL FATE, MORBID ANGEL, DEICIDE and SLAYER, VITAL REMAINS based their survival through a DIY underground approach that earned them a rabid legion of fans. However, after four full-length releases the group's biggest break would come in 2003 as they signed to Century Media and released the genre-defying epic "Dechristianize". It was hailed by critics and fans alike as one of extreme metal's most accomplished and ambitious works yet that ever garnered mainstream acclaim. The album quickly elevated the band into the death metal elite and was supported by four full U.S. tours, further solidifying their status as one of the genre's hardest-working acts.
