Karyn Crisis Put To Better Use

Posted by no-A on November 30th, 2006

I’ve never been a fan of Crisis. As a matter of fact I find Karyn Crisis’ vocal style to be more irritating than pig squeals. The only impressions that Crisis has left are burn marks in my ear.I knew for a while that she had some artwork but I never took the time to really look at it. Her website doesn’t show much of her paintings, except for some that are morbid and cool looking but nothing too special. However, I will give the girl credit for her leather works. Her skill is extremely impressive. She has a couple of bags, belts and bracelets for sale in the shop section of her site. Everything is made by her hand work. The details on the pieces are quite unique. Bravo to you Karyn, stick to this craft… and spare my ears the bleeding.

CD Review: Into Eternity - The Scattering of Ashes

Posted by Cosmo Lee on November 29th, 2006

intoeternity thescatteringofashes 1The first time time I heard Into Eternity, they opened for Hate Eternal on a bill heavy with growl-and-gurgle death metal bands. Imagine my surprise when the guitarists kicked into the synchronized runs of "Splintered Visions" and then-new singer Stu Block erupted into impossibly high power metal vocals. I nearly fell over laughing. However, as the set went on, the band won me over with its mix of death, prog, and power metal. Imagine late Death crossed with Dream Theater and Painkiller-era Judas Priest, and you have Into Eternity.

Formed in the late '90s, this Saskatchewan group has undergone a number of lineup changes, with only two original members remaining. However, Into Eternity has developed a singular sound, culminating in 2004's spectacular Buried in Oblivion. The album featured note-perfect, virtuosic instrumental playing, but the highlight was Chris Krall's vocals, which effortlessly went from high melodic singing down to low death growls.

Thus, Block had big shoes to fill. However, he firmly establishes himself here as a formidable vocalist. His range is higher than Krall's; Block occasionally dips down to a competent low growl, but his dirty vocals are mostly midrange rasps. His clean vocals sound less full than Krall's, but he can go much higher; he hits some seriously glass-shattering notes here.

Despite its new vocalist, the band still sounds very much like itself. The few tweaks here are small. The production is clear but beefier than before. Power metal takes slight precedence over death metal, and Block's vocals are mostly clean. The prog element is also slightly decreased, as the guitarists spend less time with technical runs in favor of catchy, anthemic chord progressions. Still, these songs would be "Face-Melters" in Guitar Hero; the extended 9ths in "Nothing" are pure Death circa Symbolic, while the last three songs have incredibly frenzied tremolo picking and double bass kicks.

On this album, Into Eternity has crafted the most cohesive, memorable songs of its career. Those hoping for Buried in Oblivion II may be disappointed, but they have few legitimate grounds for complaint. Could you play these songs? I didn't think so.

Bush PWNED by Jim Webb

Posted by 3D on November 29th, 2006

Ouch.

At a recent White House reception for freshman members of Congress, Virginia's newest senator tried to avoid President Bush. Democrat James Webb declined to stand in a presidential receiving line or to have his picture taken with the man he had often criticized on the stump this fall. But it wasn't long before Bush found him.

"How's your boy?" Bush asked, referring to Webb's son, a Marine serving in Iraq.

"I'd like to get them out of Iraq, Mr. President," Webb responded, echoing a campaign theme.

"That's not what I asked you," Bush said. "How's your boy?"

"That's between me and my boy, Mr. President," Webb said coldly, ending the conversation on the State Floor of the East Wing of the White House.

OMG PWNAGE of BUSH WEBB IS tHa r0XX0rzzz FTW!!!!111~~!! LAWL!!
No seriously, it's good that five years later, the post-9/11 hysteria is ending and it's finally OK to call the president a clown. But it also doesn't make sense that the same guys who criticize them on the campaign will stand next to him for nicey-nice handshake pictures and say good things about him. I think they need to start calling him out on his clownishness, like this. Don't give respect where it isn't earned.

I think that's part of why Kerry lost. Because he stood ten feet from Bush during the debates, and listened to the same insane, genocidal drivel coming out of Bush's mouth that we all did, and yet he actually gave Bush the respect he would have been deserving of if he was making sense.

He should have stood at the podium, waited till Bush finished, then said "What the FUCK did he just say?" He would have won in a landslide. That's why the Democrats swept Congress — nobody likes Bush, and when the Democrats finally started pointing out what a fuckup he was, they won in a landslide. It's too bad it took them six years to start being honest, but it's a good start.

BREAKING NEWS: Axl Rose insults someone

Posted by 3D on November 29th, 2006

How to win friends and influence people, by W. Axl Rose:

Guns 'N' Roses have lost the support act for their fifteen-date tour after only one night.

The Eagles of Death Metal reportedly walked out of the tour after a run in with both the audience and Guns 'N' Roses frontman Axl Rose.

At their opening performance in Cleveland the band were apparently booed by the crowd. Then, during the main act's set, Axl Rose referred to the band as "The Pigeons of Shit Metal".

First, has he walked by a mirror lately? Let's just say he shouldn't really be comparing anyone else to a pigeon or any kind of poultry in general.

"I'm supposed to have three pounds of breadcrumbs backstage. It's in my rider, motherfucker. CAW! CAW!"

Second, no offense to the EODM, but you kind of deserve what you get when you voluntarily go on tour with Axl Rose, without having lost a horrific bet or something. The guy can't tour without beating up fans, starting riots by showing up 90 minutes late, or feuding with the opening band. I don't get why he doesn't just tour solo, and do a 2 hour show, or whatever. The delusional, bald-mulleted, middle-aged section of their fan demographic are likely to boo whatever comes on first anyway. You might as well be Carrot Top doing warm-up comedy for Deicide.

EODM certainly had a sense of humor about the whole thing.

In a statement by the Eagles of Death Metal, lead singer Jesse Hughes said: "At first the audience refused to welcome us to the jungle, but by the time we took our final bow it had become paradise city.

"Although Axl tried to November rain on our parade, no sweet child o' mine can derail the EODM night train. We say live and let die."

To which Axl responded, "Hey, it's been 14 Years since I did anything relevant. It's not So Easy to get attention anymore." (rimshot)

I haven't seen Guns 'n' Roses live since they put together a completely new lineup of guys no one wants to see since they reformed, but I heard that he has his voice back and is playing covers and the whole thing sounds pretty good. I still wouldn't go see them because I'm not a sucker. I saw the Guns 'n' Roses/Metallica show years ago and he decided to show up 2 hours late. I'll stick to YouTube, where I can fast-forward the 90-minute gap where no one is on stage and the audience starts rioting.

Pamela Anderson is available

Posted by RobInjection on November 29th, 2006

Waawaaweewa

Ok, I don't mean to turn this blog into a gossip column nor do I think that anything Kid Rock does is relevant, but this is just too good. In case you haven't been watching E! or Entertainment Tonight, you probably don't know that Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock have recently filed for divorce, not 4 months after getting married. Now, reliable news source Page Six reports that the reason was because Kid flipped out at an early screening of the Borat movie. Check it out:

"Bob (Kid Rock) started screaming at Pam, saying she had humiliated herself and telling her, 'You're nothing but a whore! You're a slut! How could you do that movie?' - in front of everyone. It was very embarrassing. Pam thought he could have a sense of humor about the movie. She was in on the gag from the very beginning and loved doing the movie. And on the eve of what was supposed to be a very positive thing, he made it an awful night. Ever since, it has been icicles between them. Bob is just a very unhappy and angry man. Pam is very disenchanted and sad. You know, there are reasons why she never married him before. Those reasons disappeared while they were together on a boat in St. Tropez, but she knows now that they never went away. The reality is he is an insecure, angry man."

Hey Kid, it was a joke…kind of like the current state of your career….ZING

Seemless have a really nice "Unit"

Posted by deadspout on November 27th, 2006

So, as I was taking a massive poop, I was reading the newest issue of Revolver magazine and stumbled across a monthly featured article called "The Unit". Now if you aren't familiar with this, I can give you a short summary. Revolver catches up with bands that are on tour in a spur of the moment situation, they ask the band to record on their portable recording device…whilst under the pressure of the moment.

SeemlessI love the idea. I heard the results of The Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah from previous issues; however, I wasn't sure what to expect from hearing the newest session from "The Unit". Revolver magazine caught up with Seemless, one of my fanboy favorites…because of Jesse Leach. For some of you that listen to my radio show, Dead Zone, know that at one point I did a whole hour dedicated to him…which he was greatful of…So, as soon as I saw that Seemless was this months featured artist, I quickly shat out the rest of my waste and my hand acted as an electrical sander with toilet paper so I could get out and see if the Mp3 was posted. Luckily, it was.

I promptly accessed, www.revolvermag.com and clicked "The Unit" in the menu which took me directly to the link. At the bottom was the url for "Death Rattle (Come Hither)". Pretty funny name…Jesse actually says, "Come Hitha" in the intro…its pretty funny.

In the beggining, you can hear a sick fucking drum groove and stoner type guitar riffs remenisant of Crowbar. Its pretty amazing what you can do with drum machines. For only having 15 minutes to come up with a song, they did VERY well. I was almost creaming my pants until I heard Jesse's vocals. It was probably funny at the moment, but damn it, they sucked. I am not about to go and rip on him because for one I know it was a joke and two he is way better as a vocalist then this display.

Ewww. Seriously. Ewww.

The lyrics are actually fucking cool:

Crawl To Life
born from the ashes of mankind
vile hatred fills the veins of the unbroken
this fight in eternal night
Shadow's cast inside our souls
the stillborn came to life again
a river of blood spills down into the valley
weary & weak we drink to the undying battle
death cries from our bruised lungs
battled in mother earth regurgitation
Hide my flesh inside her roots
this is our final damnation
forever to suffer suffocated
in this dark embrace

Pretty fucking grim if you ask me, it reminded me of his Corrin days. DAMN IT WHY DIDN'T YOU DO BLACK METAL VOCALS!!!!!

Anywho, check out the song by clicking here.

Mad props to Revolver magazine for doing such a thing. Sometimes, its good sometimes its bad…overall, I guess it shows who can shine or who will dine on my pooh.

CD Review: Wolf - The Black Flame

Posted by Cosmo Lee on November 26th, 2006

wolf theblackflame 1If Sweden's Wolf had its way, Bruce Dickinson would never have joined Iron Maiden and Rob Halford would never have left Judas Priest. Over its past three full-lengths, the band has honed an unabashedly retro blend of early-'80s Maiden and Priest that has mostly escaped the cheese factor common in power metal. 2002's Black Wings was enjoyable, but the best first taste of Wolf is 2004's Evil Star, a showcase for the most Halford-esque vocals heard since Ripper Owens.

The Black Flame is slightly disappointing. Niklas Stålvind's vocals are stirring as always, but the riffs and melodies underneath are flat and uninspired. A few highlights do peek through, like the anthemic hook in "Make Friends with Your Nightmares" and the proggy bridge in "The Bite." The performances are sharp, but they just don't hit the air guitar-inducing heights of earlier albums. The Studio Fredman production, too, is technically flawless, but the sound is so clean and bright that it's almost harsh. If you want an updated, album-length version of "Eat Me Alive," look no further.
